Would you recommend an x700 pro or 6600 gt (both 128mb) for cs:s/hl2 (only games i will be playing)? btw, this card is not for the rig in my sig.
 
x700pro or 6600gt? definetrly the 6600gt.. but i think ur comparing wrong.... 6600gt vs x700xt..... so it'll be the x700XT not the pro.. but the 6600gt is more furtureproof but i guess u dont need it so x700xt
 
so far for CS:S the nvidia cards are faster

no idea on hl2 yet tho it uses the same engine as cs:s

i'd go with the 6600GT
 
If your only playing CS:S and HL2 then I'd say a 9800XT or the 256mb 9800 Pro would be better option then the X700's, HL2 should benefit from the extra memory.

Well the x700 xt isn't out yet, and the 6600 gt is only $20 more than the x700 pro so that's why I'm comparing them. Needs to be pci-e too cause it's for a pci-e mobo :cool:

So your going PCIe then I'd say that you should do well with either card but if you read the reviews the 6600GT is overall a better card.
 
Im thinking same comparison, I saw sites that showed the x700pro ocing past xt speeds... w/ the 256 memory Im thinking its pretty attractive, even without the sli and sm3.0..
Tough decision though.

Edit: yeah I heard that Source plays better with 256 also, not some silly hunch, but because at high detail the 128 cards can start have some troubles in intense scenes, like a lot people running in the water. As for calling the 6600gt more futureproof, im not sure I agree, because sm3.0 might not matter as much as having 256mb ram.
 
On these middle level cards I'm not sure 256mb of ram will really do much help since they still have a 128-bit pipeline, I just don't think the extra mem will help much if the card can't really utilize the extra ram because it can't send data fast enough to fill it. You know?

For 1024 or 800 resolutions I'm sure either X700 or 6600 series will do well but if you want to go higher with max quality settings then you might want to start looking at the 6800GT or X800 XT.
 
Actually on one review that I read they said the GPU was getting held back on the x700xt by the memory bandwidth, and I think these cards actually can benefit from the 256, unlike something like the 9600xt. Not positive, but on some benchmarks of source it started to show at high setting and high res, the 6600gt would slouch below the x700pro pretty significantly.

Edit: It would be really sweet to see a comparison between a 6600gt oced and stock vs a x700pro oced and stock... Especially for source since it will be the engine of the future.

You just proved my point, if they had a "Special Edition" with an 256-bit memory interface I'm sure the GPU could really fly but they're not (or atleast I'm pretty sure they won't) so the mem interface continues to be a bottleneck for the GPU.

ummmm those specs in his sig is not his comp he is using for the new videocard.. which means that the 6600gt and x700's are pci which means he has a pci express cpu/motherboard and it is probably a pentium 4 so upgrading form what he has is to an athlon 64 wouldnt gain much performance unlike getting a new videocard :) just a thougt :p
