video driver installation problem

I installed a 256 RAM video card by Radeon (ATI) and have had small issues since I did it. It all started after I reformated the h.d. and I don't think the drivers are installed correctly. The computer wil reboot upon start-up sometimes or I will be a very light windows logo like it is starting up but it only gets that far. I have to reboot to get it to work properly.
I tried to install the drivers but it said it failed and a error messgae said to try and install a Standard VGA Card before installing. As you can prob. tell I am a newbie. Thanks for any help.
 
im a noob too but heres my two cents

if the installation went smoothly without problems(ie no error messages), go get the beta driver from ati, itl tell you its not digatally signed, install it anyways. if that still doesnt work, right click on my computer, go to manage. open the tab device manager, click on display adapters, there should be the name of your graphics card, right click on the name and click update driver.

oh and if you dont have my computer on your desktop (which is realllly odd) right click on your desktop go to proporties, go to the desktop tab, go to costomize desktop, check off the my computer check-box.

if there were error messages, obviosly reinstall.

if that still doesnt work its most likey a hardware flaw. send it back.
 
Changing ATI Drivers
To get the latest Catalyst (CCC & driver) package, go here:

Get the package, release notes and uninstaller mentioned below.
Read Notes. You need XP SP2 and .Net Framework. If you don’t have the .NET stuff, follow the link and install it before going any further.
After having .NET v1.1 installed …

1. Start >Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs >ATI Catalyst Control Center >Remove.
2. Do not Restart when prompted.
3. ATI Display Driver >Remove.
4. Restart when prompted.
5. Upon return to Desktop in Windows Standard display, cancel offer to install drivers.
6. Start >Run >browse to where you downloaded the new ATI Catalyst driver package and run it.
If the above doesn’t work out, download this util: ATI Catalyst uninstaller
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27 Utilities >Various >CATALYST – ATI Maintenace Utilities > cat-uninstaller.exe
This will clean your system of any ATI software along with any remnants that could be causing problems.
Use it instead of steps 1, 2 and 3 above; then continue with steps 4, 5 and 6.

Holy Crap! thanks for posting this. I had uninstalled and tried reinstalling CCC 4 times before I gave up. I would always restart after removing CCC and it would never take, and I get this annoying missing file error while restarting. cli.exe missing/cant run ect ect. Cant wait to get home to try this out! Dual screen with my HDTV here I come...
 
Gah, Im an idiot twice over. Nothing left to do now but try to figure out how to blame some one...
