how does everyone monitor temps on their vid cards? do they come with diodes that can interface with software or what? i would really like to know if my video card is frying or not

I use ATI tool on my 9600xt. It measures the temps from an on-die probe, and you can set it up to display the temps in your system tray. I'm not sure if the 9700 supports that, but I'd bet that it does. Try it and find out. You might also find that you can squeeze a little more performance from your card using ATItools' overclocking capabilities.
just google atitool, it's free...

yea ati tool works great for overclocking and temp readings....it reads the same temp that is in my ati overdrive tool bar...but i think only the xt's have that feature..

hmmm i use ATItool but havent seen any temp displays. i am at work so i cant check right now but i think i would have noticed a temp display  right now i am running 375/330 on my 9700pro and i dont want to fry it.

well i dont see an temp display in ati tool so i guess a 9700pro doesnt have a sensor for temp readouts. all see in the spinning fuzzy box window is FPS and AVG fps.
