I just recieved some items I purchased from techboy here on [H], I installed everything it was going well until the first boot of windows, after the splash screen the screen went blank. Tried reinstalling twice but to no avail. Then I tried my old X1900XT and it worked without a hitch on the mobo i purchased from tech so its not the mobo. I checked the card twice for any thermal compound and found nothing on the board.

Should I assume the card is DOA? Is there anything I can do I didn't try? Its a Radeon 4850.
 
You really need to be more clear and give more information... So you reinstalled the card twice and it still didn't work? or did you reinstall windows twice? And what do you mean there was no thermal compound on it? Did you actually take a brand new card and remove the heatsink to check?

Did you remember to plug in the power connectors to the card? Can you boot into safe mode? What windows OS are you running? Is your power supply powerful enough to run the card?

Post your specs and windows OS. Also, you are using a legit copy of windows right?
 
I reinstalled windows twice, thinking something might have gone wrong in install. The graphics card came with an aftermarket cooler which was taken off and so was the stock heatsink. I checked the board to see if there was any thermal compound anywhere on it as that might be a reason.

Yes I did remember to plug in the power connectors. I CAN boot into safe mode. I am running Windows 7 64bit legit.

My powersupply is a Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500W with 18Amp 12v. (model # RS-500-PCAR-A3). The mobo is MSI Platinum P35. E6550 @ 2.33ghz (No overclock). 2GB of Crucial Ballistix 4-4-4-12 DDR2.

I'm confused, what did you buy from techboy? Is is a videocard, if so what model. Is your mobo bios updated? If not start there.
 
I bought the E6550, 4850, and the MSI p35 platinum motherboard. It is a Sapphire Radeon 4850.

Update your motherboard bios and see how that helps. Also get into the bios and make sure all settings are as they should be especially when it comes to video. Primary video pcie etc... I can't think of anything else to suggest since you've already tried troubleshooting via software reinstall multiple times.
 
Ya, pcie is primary video. I checked to make sure there was no onboard video on and found out there was no onboard video integrated at all so that was good. I shall try bios update tomorrow.
 
I think your issue is almost definitely your power supply, as the unit you have is pretty crappy. Also I don't really follow what you are saying about thermal compound being on the board.... you need thermal compound between the chip and the heatsink. I am very confused as to what you are on about here...
 
Its simple, when someone puts on thermal compound they have a chance at accidently putting thermal compound on the board, a little dab accidently falling out from the trail out of the opening of the tube as you move your hand away from the board. I'm surprised you never thought about something like that.
 
Well, DOA means it was dead when it arrived for you. Since you made it into Windows at least once, and are able to go into Windows safe mode I wouldn't consider the card dead at all. Have you tried a Ubuntu (live CD or USB) environment?

When you reinstalled Windows did you do it to an entirely new/formatted drive or just install (repair) over the top of your old installation? It sounds like a heavily modified card (aftermarket heatsink and all), have you tried PMing techboy to ask if maybe he was using a custom BIOS as well? It might be hitting the Windows desktop, drivers kick in and tell the card to go into 3D speed mode which the card might not be able to handle in your setup because of temperature/quality of power signal/etc.

I am confused. If you installed windows twice with the card in the system then the card is not dead.
 
I never made it into Windows with the card, when I put in my X1900XT I made it into windows to finalize set up and then I was able to get into Safe Mode with my 4850.

I wonder what CompUSA's return policy is like, I might buy a PSU and test it out.
 
The manual states the 12v power connection should be greater than 18A. Mine only has 18Amps, that might be the problem. I'll go get a new PSU and try it out today.
 
just make sure you get a good quality psu... if you aren't sure post in the power supply section, don't get another garbage psu like the cooler master you have now.
