Okay... here is the problem.

I am upgrading my main home machine, and my POS video card needs to go. However, what I want, and what the wife says I can get, are too different things.

What I wanted, was a BFG 6800 GT OC. She asked who had died, and when the inheritance money was coming in to pay for it. Because that was the only way I was going to get one.

I will not use ATI cards... too many problems in the past, and besides, who wants to use a card that you can't play D3 on? :)

I am looking at the NVidia FX 5900 XT w/ 128 DDR3 on board. (about 170 according to Pricewatch, much better than 400+, in my wife's opinion.)

Now, the question is, is anyone running D3 on this card? How does it play other Dx9 games? What issues should I watch for on this card? Is it as good as I hope it is?

I'd suggest saving up for the 6800 GT, the FX series is horrendous to say the least and the 5900 xt isn't a very good card, it can do ~9700 np/pro speeds at least from what I remember from the benchies.

It gets it sass whooped with AA and AF though. Just not a good gpu..

Edit whoops it does 9600xt speeds when you turn aa and af up.. sorry

I'm sure itd do well in opengl games... Just dx9 games it would suffer hardcore cause of the architecture.
 
just wait a month or two prices should drop a bit, plus the 6600's will be out with AGP parts, if you really don't want an ATi card, otherwise either a 9700 pro or 9800 pro will be your best options.

Yeah 10fps difference at best makes it sooo unplayable.......
 
I wouldn't get the FX series. They are really poor compared to the ATI 9800 series. It's either a 9800 Pro>6800 GT. ATI will eventually improve their OpenGL performance with time. But that's what it is time.

edit: I would recommend you save up for a 6800nu for 250 its a great deal. Or you can wait for the 6700Us come out which are same price as the 6800nu, and have higher clock speeds!
 
There's no reason to get the 5900XT now when the 6600GT is right around the corner. For $30 more, you'll get 2-3 times the performance in Doom 3 and probably 1.5-2 times the performance in DX9 games. The vanilla 6800 is a good option as well if you cannot wait, though more expensive.

Concerning your ATI comment, don't fall for the anti-ati BS that seems to be so prevalent around here nowadays. Doom 3 is perfectly playable on ATI cards.
 
If you need to get it NOW, the 5900XT is a great choice...good card, if a bit slow at DX9, still a nice upgrade. As Lazier_Said pointed out, if you can swing an extra $80, then get the BFG 6800 OC at outpost.com for $249. It's going to be about 80% faster than the 5900XT...great card.

If you can wait...then get a 6600GT AGP when it comes out. It will be about 50-60% faster than the 5900XT.
 
A 6800 nu will more than double the performance of that 5900xt, maybe triple. Not bad for like 70 more dollars!

Alright guys, I get the hint :) What I've decided to do is wait, save up the extra green, and get at least the 6800nu or 6600 AGP when it ships. I guess my tired ol' OC'ed MX440 64MB will just have to suffice for a bit more.

Besides, I have to kinda give in a bit to her... she said okay to 16x DL DVD burner, 1GB of Dual channel 400 RAM the other day... can't bitch too much.

Oh yeah, about that comment about buying it without her knowledge... she handles the money in the house. Nothing like having a professional bookkeeper in the house to handle that kinda thing, ya know ;)

If I get lucky here soon... maybe, just maybe, I can sweettalk her into that 450 card... we'll see.

It doesn't cost $450 at all. This is what I suggest you do. I was just looking at pricewatch, newegg has the ASUS 6800 GT in stock. I'd go with an ASUS card... because they pick their components well and you could probably get a nice OC on it.

Who cares about the BFG already OC'ed out of the box. My eVGA does 440/1180 just fine.

Anyway, I'd save up to get a 6800gt. It seems (from your mx card desc.) that you'll be keepin g the card around for a while. Also, i have this to say about ATi. I had an ati radeon 9800 pro that worked just fine... sold it for the eVGA 6800GT. Now, I didn't play recent games all that much, but I do notice this -- opengl just renders better with a geforce card. I'm running opengl on cs:source now, and let me tell you, it's pretty. My ATI card worked fine, and gave me good FPS... but... I also play action quake 2 (yes, i still play it. And yes, it's still fun). AQ2 looks a lot nicer now... the lighting is much more dynamic. So... that's my opinion anyway. Good luck with the card.

EDIT: Whoopsie doo... the asus only has 128MB ram... however, if you want to play future games, 256MB might be more future proof. In that case, the best deal around, in my opinion, is the eVGA -- it overclocked well for me.... but you might have different results.

That asus card looks like an overpriced overclocked 6800 vanilla card.That card is mislabeled and a trick. I wouldn't call that cheap. Especially since it's using DDR1 ram at 700MHz. You are better of with the newegg EVGA 6800GT priced at around 385 or so if you could ever bring your wife to accept that.
 
Yeah, Asus really screwed up with their naming. Or misunderstood nVidia's instructions or something.

Seriously, the BFG 6800nu @ $249 at Output is probably your best bet at the moment. Cross your fingers it might mod to a full 16-pipe/6 vertex units and you'd REALLY be set!

Yeah, being 16 with your own job is a sweet deal for PC parts. Don't get used to it, though, unless you plan on living with your parents forever. "Real life" has a way of taking a BIG f*ing chunk out of your PC budget. Like, say, -150% or so.

Yeah, next thing you know your working as much overtime as you can just to pay for that sweet BFG 6800GT.....all while trying to afford basic living expenses and a GF. :(
 
I have a 5900 XT OC BFG and it's a good card .. I just ordered all new parts for my rig .. along with a BFG 6800 GT so i'll run the same games and give you a heads up of what I think of games under the 2 cards I'll play game before and after

Yep, yep, yep. Realilty sucks. I can remember 16... barely :). Being 30 now, I have a slightly different outlook on things. ;)

What I'll probably end up doing is just waiting a bit, and picking up a 6800GT... just requires a tad more patience on my part.

Good decision. You won't regret it.

And like I said, I like the way NVIDIA does OpenGL... I dont think I'll replace my card for a couple years.

Next to go is my p4. A64 just has too much "spank" on it. :(

if you need a card right now, i definately would not buy anything 5900 as the 9700pro would probably own them, and the 9800pro/xt would definately own them...and who said ATI cant play doom3? i have a 9800pro oc'd past xt speeds and doom3 plays smooth as fuck..i have it set on high quality and get like 40+ fps
 
I'm more concered with why you let your wife make your decisions .... :/ What is the world coming to these days. Buy what you want and send her shopping .. done deal. May require some saving though of course :)
 
I say get the 6800nu if you have to get a card now. Do not get the 59** series....

...the only card you CANT play D3 on is the nVidia 5800. (It will barely start the game before melt down of it's GPU)
