Vid card memory reported wrong?

Strange issue I have not seen before.

I went with a temporary/backup video card that was $10AR while I shop around, wait for amd 7 series and black friday to come around. I bought a zotac(yeah yeah I know) gt 220 512mb ddr2 pcie video card right...

Now, this is not a "problem" per say, but the memory on this card is being reported as 1GB(1024MB). Obviously the more the better right, but the card clearly says on the box and in all spec details that it has 512mb, not 1GB. In the driver details it says 1024MB memory and I also loaded up CPU-Z which also states it has 1024MB memory...Huh?


Basically, I am just bored and was wondering if any other experienced users have run into incorrectly reported memory for vid cards.

What is a definitive way to check how much memory it has?
 
find out how many vram chips a 512 card has vs 1gb card then Count the vram chips.
EDIT google says 8 for 1gb 4 for 512 mb

No, that assumes the density you have is 1Gbit. If you have 2Gbit chips, you could have 4 chips (1GB) or 2 chips (512MB). DDR2 is made in densities right now from 512Mbit to 2Gbit, so you really have no idea what you've got by simple counting.

The only way you can tell for sure is to count the number of memory devices AND get the part number off the top of the memory chip. And then you hope and pray the the DRAM maker makes their datasheets available to the public internet (like Hynix, for instance) :D

Also Retsam: what are you using that "reports" the memory as 1GB? Have you tried GPU-z?
 
I cant really count the chips anyways as the heatsink covers them all. Heh. Not really a big issue though. The sticker with the serial number and all that on the back of the card itself says 512mb so I am going to assume it is some weird glitch with drivers or bios or something.

And to answer your question, I used the driver info tab in windows and also CPU-Z. I have not used GPU-Z though.

EDIT: Small update. GPU-Z does display 512mb. Im guessing it is an issue with drivers or something. Not sure why windows/cpu-z read it wrong.
