Right now, I have an Abit NF7-S mainboard. IMO one of it's best features is on the fly dolby digital encoding for everything. I have it hooked up to a home theatre receiver which in turn spits it out to a 5.1 speaker set up.

I was wondering, does the via K8T800 chipset do that as well? Just to clarify- I am not asking if the via has 6 channel audio, I know it does.

The Gigabyte GA-K8VNXP I have has the K8T800 chipset, and it has 6 channel, as you said, including an optical digital output, which can be plugged into many receivers for 5.1 surround sound. It may depend on the board. I'm not sure if the audio chip on the motherboards is part of the K8T800 chipset or not. Just take a look at your board, and the boards that you're interested in, and see exactly which audio chip is integrated.
