VIA Audio sucks!!

get a sound card? Also not all via sound sucks, i have a chaintech av710 it has a via chipset i thnk and it has great sound output.
 
What sucks about it? Trying to determine what you are doing.

I am not using the Shuttle driver, and am using the newest one from via. It is much better than the last one I used from shuttle. Also if you are in 2 channel turn on high quality 2 channel and connect to that jack. The only drawback is you lose the microphone.

If you are thinking about a sound card, for internal no dice. Nothing is available in PCI-e x1. Externally there are only a few options.

Creative Video
All the other options use the Envy24 chipset and that's not what you want. Though sound quality output, the envy cards are better than the 2 creative cards listed, I am guessing you are talking about gaming and not about music.
 
Well yeah the 1x PCI-e really puts a damper on things. I am saying it sucks tons compared to my Creative audigy 2 ZS, maybe ill just wait till they come out with a PCIe 1x card :rolleyes:

You really think so? I didn't. Tried both, put the 2 ZS back into the parts bin. I didn't have the ZS in the sn25p, obviously, but my point is that the rig with the 2 ZS didn't sound any better than the sn25p for gaming, at least for me. If you really want something, they make a usb version of the audigy 2, I believe. You might look into that.

You'll not get the creative screech of death with the sn25p onboard sound, I'll say that much. :). I couldn't even play dragonshard with a 2 zs, it locked up with the patented creative screech of death before even getting out of the opening menu. Only way to get it to work was turn off hardware acceleration.

Course, the sn25p is in the parts bin now too. Ran out of room in it, had to move to something bigger(p180, lol, lots bigger).
 
USB version of the A2 is an A1 in disguise.

Now I won't say you are smoking crack about the sound quality of VIA vs Audigy, because the DAC might be weaker on the Envy24PT chip and board noise may degrade the sound. But allegedly it uses the same or higher DAC than the Envy24HT, which rocks. http://htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3616#.

I have an Audigy 2 and an Audiotrak Prodigy. For music, both of them put out clear, strong output compared to typically crackly onboard solutions. The fidelity of the Prodigy is so much crisper than the A2, it really is amazing. A2 sounds bassy and sounds like it loses the higher khz, due to its internal resampling. Audigys still beat the VIA solution for gaming, hands down, but for music VIA has a far better chipset. Wish I could have both. :(

Actually, Audigy2 NX is undeserving of the Audigy name, IMO. I have one for my media center (only way to share my surround sound setup between my HTPC and my laptop), and I've come to terms with some of its shortcomings. The only way in which it is markedly better than the Extigy (Audigy1 USB) is the sound quality is often crisper, probably due to the higher bandwidth of USB2.

The 2NX does not have its own sound processor, unlike the other Audigy/2-class cards. IOW, all of the work is carried out by the CPU- this means encoding/decoding as well as simply providing the card with information, as the USB bus has to carry lots of info for the card to sound as good as it does. Notice how the NX is the only non-value Audigy product without a THX certification.

This is trivial, but also notice that the Extigy actually had the option of emulating a receiver- that is, it could mix/output different sources without even being hooked up to a PC; the 2NX only works while the computer is on and helping it process the signal.

I've often considered going back to the Extigy, and still haven't convinced myself I made the right choice.
