VDI with Datacenter Edition

Came back from a VMWare session in Vancouver and Horizon now support 2k8r2 and one of their slides said you could technicaly use Datacenter Edition of Windows server to create VDIs for users to save on licensing costs instead of licensing Windows Pro/ENT etc..Any one try this?

Yes, that's what we have. Cisco UCS chassis with each blade licensed with 2012 Datacenter. Unlimited licensed VMs.

User Cals are covered by your servers any way that a cost you can't get away with. This is for VDI User desktops I can see using Unlimited VM's for VDI being nice. I wonder how long MS changes that.

Exactly, its a cost that you are paying anyways so essentially running Server 2012 Datacenter VM's for VDI would be "free".
 
The way I see it, the question boils down to a one time cost of socket-based DC licenses, versus recurring Windows 7/8 SA or Virtualization Rights. Or am I missing something? It would also depend on your density of VMs per socket as well, at least for the 1st year.
 
Yeah. You see this a lot in hosted VDI environments. Really the only way to do it due to licensing.
 
I was under the impression that M$ required a VDA subscription for virtual desktops?

Only applies if you are licensing windows desktop os but you are licensing Server os that has Unlimited visualization rights.

If you are hosting window7 or 8 then you are under a VDA restrictions, meaning last I looked you can ONLY host a windows workstation on hardware owned by the user. Meaning you cannot have shared hardware infrastructure and windows VDA agreements.

This is why xenapp and term server are still the most used approach unless VDA is used inside a major corporation.

Now if you wanted to give each user a Windows server OS with a windows 7 theme you can do that under datacenter edition licensing with no additional costs.
