I am fast approaching my RHCE exam and like usual, I am planning for the next big thing on my to do list which is the VCP exam. I have been running ESXi since 3.5 at home however I have never really delved into the system as much as I would like to have. I have compiled the following outline for obtaining the VCP cert and I was wondering what your [H] opinions of it are. I greatly appreciate any input.

1) Purchase & read Mastering VMware vSphere 4 by Scott Lowe
2) Read VMware PDFs in following order:
a) Introduction To vSphere
b) Getting Started with ESX
c) ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide
d) Upgrade Guide
e) Basic System Administration
f) vSphere Web Access Administration
g) ESX Configuration Guide
h) Resource Management Guide
i) Availability Guide
j) Fibre Channel SAN Configuration Guide
k) Setup for Failover Clustering and Microsoft Cluster Services
l) Virtual Networking Concepts
m) VCB (Backup) Administration Guide

q) vSphere4 Documentation Notes
3) Review the “VCP on vSphere4 Blueprint” and verify knowledge of listed topics

5) Take the following practice exams
a) Simon Long’s Practice & Maximum Exams
b) VMware’s Mock Exam
6) Enroll & complete the VCP 410 exam

looks good and well planned out. Fast track will be like drinking from a firehose though, just FYI.
 
FWIW, I entered fast track for VI3 back in the day, already with a half-decent amount of self-learned material, and found almost no new information. It's more useful for someone who had minimal prior exposure to vmware. At least I wasn't the one who paid for it :p

Memorizing the maximums and other pdfs along with the Rob Schmidt practice questions helped the most, probably.
 
Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm looking forward to diving into the world of VMware. Are there certain types of labs that you guys had setup during your study stages that helped you excel on the exam?
 
real world scenarios are always best. barring that, you can do an entire environment in a box with minimal equipment. a dual core, 8gb of ram, and two 30gb ssds running windows or linux as the host OS + workstation + iscsi target VM +esx vms + ad vm + sql vm + few test vms = great.
 
I'm still semi new to vsphere and I will be doing the fast track starting march 15th through work... Should be cool, I'll report back how the class was.
