vCloud Directory vs vCAC

We are a Service Provider and setup vCloud Director last year. I knew vCloud Directory was moving away from Enterprises, but our rep made it sound like it was there to stay for VSPP's. After VMworld it sounds like they are no longer developing vCloud Director although it will still be available. After about 18 months, the UI will be completely gone forcing Service Providers to develop their own UI or use a third party like OnApp.

I see that vCAC is available on the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP)

If we want to continue we self service cloud, should we be looking to move towards vCAC? Also how does it compare to vCloud Directory especially for multi-tenancy?
 
It's still being developed for service providers, jsut out of the vCloud Air team instead of core VMware - this means it won't have "product" releases, but "feature packs" based on what the Air team is doing for their hybrid cloud. Most of the UI functions for it move to vCAC (for places that have a separate author team, and a consumption team) or vSphere (for everyone else).

vCAC currently doesn't match up when you look at tenancy - but it's heading that way. vCD is still required for good multi-tenancy work (and, btw, vCAC can front vCD just happily as could be).

As for self service - it all depends on what your users do. Do they build their own vApps? If so, vCAC doesn't make that easy right now. Do they just consume pre-made content? vCAC is built for that.
 
Yeah, I really don't know. We have vCD but no templates were ever setup as we never had any customers really want to purchase it. Although our CSO claims there have been 10 customers that wanted it. All I know about is the one customer that wanted to be a tenant and resell to other tenants without our involvement, which doesn't really seem possible.

Personally I have never bothered to learn the UI and was never impressed. Our CTO also isn't interested.

Most of what we sell is vPDC (Virtual Private Datacenter). Meaning we sell a certain amount of resources to the customer and give them access to their own network, datastore, resource pool and just have them access everything through vSphere over a RDP connection to a Windows server. Obviously this is much more limiting than vCD. But our main offering is Managed IaaS. Basically we do all the management of our customers virtual infrastructure. Hasn't been growing as well as we would like but personally that is because our sales people don't know how to sell it.

At this point I have no idea what makes the most sense to sell for self service.
 
It is a mess, and the MESSaging is even worse.

We're going to be doing the VSPP jazz and getting access to whatever comes of vCD, and maybe vCAC will be rolled in as a UI. Right now, vCAC is a disaster if you have competent admins that want to truly self manage and create their own content.

Let's just hope all this tightens up in the next several months.
