Using fans to cool RAM

What are some methods some of you are using to place fans over ramslots. I am in desperate need of some suggestions. My case is relatively small (praetorian), and I was interested in how some of you actually placed fans over your ram slots.

I cut a thin sheet of acrylic to match all the holes on my motherboard... Then cut out any holes for wires/tubing, paint it, and affix it 2" over the entire mobo. This stealths the board, so I can only see the parts of the board that I want. I generally cut holes out of the stealthing panel over the RAM, and attach an 80mm fan overtop of it.

I heard from another enthusiast forum that the thermaltake big typhoon blows on your ram sticks as well because of its size.

dont have any wire ties, just slapped the fan between my hsf and ram slots :D
it fits perfectly and the si-120 prevents it from falling

Wouldn't it be more effective for the fan to blow on the sticks?
its an old pic, they are blowing on the sticks right now :)

Uh, teh big typhoon blows away from the motherboard and the fan runs slow to make it silent, so there shouldn't be any air from it blowing on the ram sticks.

thanks for the replies, Im sure I can figure something out with all the suggestions, if you guys have any more add to this thread! Thanks!

Are you really having overheating problems with your memory? 99% of the time, you shouldn't need active cooling on your ram unless you're pumping 3+ volts to them

pics?

Place the fan on top of the memory, and use a rubber band that is hooked around the ram locking tabs to pass over the fan. Holds it down like a champ!

I did what the above guy suggested but I taped 2x 80mm fans together making one 80x160x20 mm fan ROFL. Then I used nylon Upholstry thread and used the mobo mounting screwes on my board to secure the thread. It does a very good job cooling my ram. I used upholstry thread cause it won't stretch out over time and is very strong.

Pics? I'd be obliged!

Excuse the RAZR pics, I gave my GF my nice camera for her vacation :(.

Im in the process of re-painting it, so it's masked on the backside, it's really a beautiful black in person.

can we get pictures of how you mount that to the mobo, and maybe some with it all hooked up :D thanks

Yep, when one comes back from RMA. Ah! Wait, nvm, I'll go grab my old Assrock board and show you. :)

OK:

Step 1, affix 3 seperate 2" long screws (6-32 thread) into holes that lineup with the bottom-left corner mobo mounting holes.

Repeat 3x, these posts have to line up with the mounting holes on the mobo.

Step3: With the mobo installed, screw in an extra 3 standoffs into the respective holes from above... This allows for the mobo to be secure, and still have threaded holes to accept the 2" screws on the stealth plate.

Screw the 3 posts into the 2nd set of mobo standoffs from above.

Done, but, please note... This stealth plate is for an A8n-Sli, so lots of the components don't line up ;)

haha, already done ;). I thought I had an awesome idea and all, then I google it, and someone already thought of it :(.

That one's for the DFI boards. To be truthful... without a working paypal account... It's not like I could sell anything anyways ;).

it depends on which chips the ram use, micron chips are notorious for running hot with less than 3volts

i can say taht with firsthand experience
my ballistix are wayyyy hot even with a fan on if i pump about 2.8~2.9v into em (45 was what my temp monitor read)

Kind of ghetto, but, twisty ties? If you dont care about look they work like a charm :D

i got it, so you just use the motherboard standoff things with longer screws to attach it

Here's what I've done recently:

The waterblock is something I made from an old P2 heatsink that I sealed up and added barbs to.

Unfortuantely, this custom block recently leaked and took out my x800xl. So I've now just attacked a large heatsink and fan to the ramsink part. I'll take some pics of that later.
