i know this really isnt meant to be done, but im having problems getting all my files off of my old main pc's HD. i just bought a new hitachi 250gig sata HD and wanted to do a fresh install and then connect my old HD to my pc and just transfer over about 100gigs or so. well after i put the new drive in and got everything setup i connected the old drive and after hours of messing with it could never get the drive to get recognized, so i figured i would try popping out the old drive and putting it in my 2nd pc and just transfer the files over the network to my main pc. well when windoze xp trys to load it blue screens and reboots. i was going to try to put the drive as a slave but i just noticed that the main drive in my 2nd pc is missing its jumpers so it can only be set to cable select. so my main question is, how do i get this drive to work, it came from one pc and now has to boot up on another pc, all i need to do is transfer the files then i can format it....

please help, thx in advance....

are you trying to get an IDE drive to work with a SATA drive? If so, you need to go into your BIOS and change your IDE controller settings to "enhanced" (I think it's under peripherals--> super IO devices or something like that).

As far as getting your old drive to boot in another computer, it's probably not going to work. XP (and 2000 for that matter) are very chipset dependent for OS booting. Sometimes you can get it to boot if the different mobos have the same chipset, but if the chipsets are different, it's not worth even trying.

they are IDE drives on my 2nd pc, but have no idea where imma get a stoopid little jumper, lol. the smallest things give u problems....

I'd suggest finding a jumper. Cable select has NEVER worked right for me.

Then you've never worked with a Compaq/HP machine. They ONLY work with cable select.

To get cable select to work you have to have 3 things:
1) A cable that can handle cable select. (Sounds dumb but not all of them do)
2) Set all the devices on the chain to CS.
3) Connect the drives in proper order. Make sure the drive you want to boot from is on the middle connector.
