My friend's laptop has had a broken audio port for over a year now. I thought a good Christmas gift would be to get him a usb sound card to let him use audio ports again. Would it be worthwhile doing this? I don't know how good these actually are. Appreciate it if anyone pointed me towards a good product as well. 50 smackers max.

USB sound cards aren't bad. For around 50 I'd either get the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro or the Creative X-Fi 5.1 USB.

Probably better than his onboard. TBAAM is supposedly about the same as the $5 chinese specials you can get on eBay, it uses the same chip, and you can find some of them that look almost identical and have the same features. These are nice because they're USB audio class compliant so you don't need any drivers.

Wasn't aware of that M-Audio Micro product, it's probably a good buy. Next step up would be the M-Audio Transit which is supposed to be quite good, but it's a bit out of your price range.
