General idiot question - Does a case spec HAVE to say USB 2.0 on it's front ports to handle 2.0? I assumed the 2.0 factor was only MB or add-in card related. Are the sockets also different?
 
Hmm... I've heard of this before, where if it doesn't say 2.0, it isn't. The sockets ARE the same, as are any markings on the cables though.

According to this thread, everything that is USB 1.1 spec compliant for cables (and I can only assume that includes motherboard front-panel usb cables as well) should be USB 2.0 compliant as well. However, the problem arises when manufacturers didn't follow the USB 1.1 spec in the first place, and then the cables are NOT capable of handling USB 2.0.

Worst case scenario, you may have to buy an additional usb 2.0 compliant front port panel.

The case documentation does not HAVE to say it is USB 2.0. If it was built within the last 6-7 years, chances are it is USB 2.0 compliant. The sockets are the same for USB 1.1 and 2.0. Twisted pair wire is specified for the data wire pair in all versions of the USB spec for 12 Mbps and 480 Mbps operation; however non-twisted wire was allowed for low speed (1.5 Mbps) devices such as a mouse or keyboard. If your case has twisted pair cable, it should work with USB 2.0.
