are there any good adapters/setups that can convert a couple (or more) usb hard drives to usable nas hardware? I'd like my pvr to be accessible to other devices on the network without needing it to be on 24/7. As a last resort I could break open the boxes and put the drives into a nas box, but I was hoping the usb option would be cheaper.

The External Drives you bought don't have the USB/SATA breakout cables already? I know SEAGATES are setup this way.

I doubt you will save much in regards of power compared to a smaller NAS which you can buy for fairly cheap.
