USB melting things?

I put a computer at this real estate office over a year ago, I just got an E-mail saying that the USB drive is frying anything they plug into it. Here is a snippet
a fire was almost started when I plugged the card reader for my digital camera into the USB port. The card reader was melted completely from the inside out and brown smoke was coming out of it

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I didn't think USB could carry enough power to melt plastic. Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do to test this USB port to see if something is really wrong with it?

a lot of the time people over react, How many things have you seen get "melted" with this computer, their card reader could have simply shorted out. if it is in fact frying multiple things, i would just get a pci usb card
 
you could attack it with a volt meter and see if its putting out the correct 5v
 
They are probably thinking it's "Melting" or "Frying" things because they aren't using the safely remove feature....

i have never used that for a card reader, as long as the card is not in it, it could however, damage a jumpdrive
