USB HDD backup?

I have been reading about backing up my NAS and several times have run across RAID1 is NOT a back up. Every suggestion is to back up to an external USB HDD. How does one do that if we are talking about a 12TB NAS? I do not recall seeing a 12TB USB drive for sale anywhere.
 
Use backup software that allows you to backup to more than 1 device continuing to the next device when a device is full.
