im formatting my inspiron e1705 right now with the os disk i just got from dell.

in the windows XP setup screen viewing the disk partitions there are some partitions i dont recognize. i only have one HD but there are like 3 partitions...

-: partion FAT 39 mb
C: partition 2 [ new (raw)] 50996 mb
D: partition 3 [FAT 32] 4754 mb

i think dell made the 4 gig partion for the OS but on "my computer" only one HD shows up

how can a make it so there is only one partion...with this mess the entire machine up?

thanks

You can delete all the partitions if you want in that section where you are now with the Windows XP cd. Just go one by one. Then create a new one and do the default max size and you should see just one then! :)

Leave the other smaller partitions if you want. They are part of the Dell Diagnostics which is available from the Dell Boot Menu. If you delete those partitions and try to enter into those Diagnostics later, it will not work.

thankyou good sir... i was just worried dell would do something dumb with those partitions but it worked fine. cheers
