Not sure if this is where I should put this or not, but I am looking into an UPS for my new build. Here it is:

i5 2500k
msi gtx 570 tf
dvd burner
128gb ssd
1tb hdd
corsair hx850
haven't decided how many fans.

But anyway...would you guys suggest getting an UPS or a good surge protector? If you suggest an UPS what wattage would you suggest? I plan on over clocking my i5 and 570, and later on sli another 570.

Do you have frequent power outages or do sensitive work that you absolutely must make sure you do not lose in case of a blackout? If the answer is no to both, just get a surge protector.

Nah just more of wanting to not get something screwed up if there is a power surge/outage. Any certain surge protector you would recommend for that kind of load?

I believe any surge protector will be able to handle that load. The important thing is the Joule suppression. The higher it is, the more you are protected against surges.

I used a 780W/1300VA backup on an i7 920 build. It only gave me about 20 minutes of real use. Since this is a continuous battery backup, unlike my old standby that switched over when required, the battery died at exactly 2 years. The cost of replacing the battery is about $75 + shipping from APC or $38 for a generic battery. I'm thinking of using a surge protector because we only lose power about 4-5 times a year, but when it goes out it likes to flicker for up to a half hour from all of the trees that knock the power lines.
