Upgrading RAID5 array, would this work?

Right now I have a RAID5 array with a LSI MegaRAID SATA 150-4 and 4 x WD2500JD drives.
I want to upgrade to WD3200JD drives, but I need someway to get the 500GB or so data I have from the old array to the new one.

I've also got a 300GB Seagate that I could part some of it on. To do the rest I was thinking of this:

Take one of my 250GB drives out, and replace it with a 320GB, the array will rebuild with 3 250GB drives and 1 320GB, then I can transfer the data that's not on the Seagate to the 250GB I took out.

Then I can take it all apart and build the 4 x 320GB array and copy over all the stuff from the 250GB and 300GB Seagate.

Does that make sense?
Any reason it wouldn't work?

Skip the rebuild.

Use one of the 320s to copy whatever doesn't fit on the 300. Then take the RAID down and copy from the 320 to a 250. This is faster than doing a rebuild and safer than copying off a degraded array. Once you have all the data on the 250, build the new array out of the 320s and restore your data to it.

When you get done, send me the 250s for having such a brilliantly simple idea :p

I'm still thinking of upgrading my controller card to a Broadcom 4452, but if not that should work great.

And I don't think I can send you a 250, but I do have an old 10GB around here somewhere :p
 
just needed to plug the usual if your data is that important to you, you should have a backup anyway in here... not that I have a backup :/

Yeah, but even if he were backing up to tape...restoring from tape == death by boredom.

Copying the data from Array -> HDD -> HDD -> Array would probably go a LOT faster than 500 GB of tape. (at least, any kind of tape that is affordable for home use)
 
I was semi-pulling your leg. honestly, just do what the guy above said.

Yep... that IS a really good idea... and the best part is it works for any size array/data/number of drives too. (as long as you're building a larger or equally sized array)
