I've always stuck with AMD but I've heard that they're having some issues with the newer gen cards.

If I DID stick with AMD, I am unfamiliar with the new models, what is considered a step-up from the 6970? Thanks

Prices are a minefield right now.
You probably want a 280x, 290, or 290x.

If you feel like hunting you can get them for around $20-$30 over MSRP but generally they're closer to $100-$120 over MSRP.

The 280x is slightly tweaked 7970. this makes the 280x just about exactly twice as fast as the 6970

A 290x is an all new card. is right about three times as fast.

I have been itching to upgrade my GPU as well, but when you start to look around, all the video cards are either out of stock or insanely priced, (like 600 or more for a card that is supposed to retail for 450). I am just going to wait until this coin mining thing is over and normality is restored...

AMD prices are kinda stupid right now. You can get the 280X for $410 or you can get the slightly faster GTX770 for $330. I think it might be time to jump over to team green if youre needing a GPU upgrade right now. A GTX770 would be twice as fast as your 6970 so youd be getting a 100% increase for $330+.

Yeah... I typically go AMD but with these prices I'd switch to green. Actually though if it was my coin I'd stick with the 6970.. which is no slouch... at least until spring then see where pricing sits.

Now is the perfect time to switch from red to green. Sell that 6970 for way more than its worth to a miner, and grab a 780. Just need to watch for a coupon code at the egg and you'll pay about $450, and have a very nice upgrade!

There really aren't any issues worth noting other than the inflated prices as everyone else is stating. Now is the best possible time to sell your 6970 as its at an all time high value at this time and won't last. I'd suggest a 680 gtx used in the $250 range or a 770gtx in the sub-$300 range.

Wow! Why are the prices so insane? Am I missing something? I'm out of the loop with whatever coins your guys are talking about

If people are using AMD cards for something special how come they can't use Nvidia's cards as well?

Thanks for breaking it down for me too, btw. with whoever said "x card is twice as fast. x2 card is three times as fast" I love the simplicity (no sarcasm)

So the GTX 770 is just as fast as a 280x? That seems to be the one I'd be looking at anyway

also where would I sell my 6970 and how much do you think I could get out of it? I really don't even know how to price the thing..

wait at least 2 months and see how prices are at the end of February Good change that R9 280 will be a steal and the prices for the R9 290 and x will have stabilized.

I'm looking at reviews of the GTX 770 and how it is comparable and if I can get it for next to nothing for selling my card... well I'm definitely doing that. Anyone here using a GTX 770? How are the drivers? Only had one Nvidia card in the past

it's a good card, just a 680 with faster RAM basically. You'll be well served with that card.
You could get around $150 for the 6970.

I would guess maybe even more, hell I got $140 from a 5870! Miners are paying stupid prices for that stuff now.

They were paying more at the beginning of the month things have come down to earth a little bit.

I just went from a 6970 to a gtx 780, find a deal for around 420 bucks and pull the trigger. The performance difference is insane I'm loving this thing.
