What would be a good video card upgrade that would work with my system. Budget max is ~$270. I play at 1080p and will be wanting to play upcoming games.

Current specs

Intel Core i5 2500k
MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) 8GB RAM
EVGA 560ti
1080p monitor @ 60 hz
CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX

I have been looking at PowerColor PCS+ Radeon R9 380 $160 with the plan to upgrade again with something from the next gen releases. A GTX 960 is also a possibility.

I also am considering of spending up to my max budget on a 390 or GTX 970 and upgrade that once the next gen refresh are released. Been doing a ton of reading on the subject but still conflicted on what to decide.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you

if you want to keep your cards long term go with the 380x or 390 if you want to upgrade every year go nvidia, pascal was taped out before asynchronous compute which is a huge thing for developers since they can extract extra performance.

While Deathroned might be right in saying the 390/390x could be a good option you can ignore the rest of his post as it's just trash. 970s can be had at the top of your price range and could be another good option.

Whatever you do, just ignore the random theories about the impact of DX12 and "asynchronous compute". Either buy what works now or wait till the next gen if you have the patience.

Almost anything mentioned will be a HUGE upgrade so it doesn't matter much which. I can speak for the 290/390 and say it will be mind blowing from what you got.

If you use VISA Checkout and code VCOBF15, you will save another $10 off $100 or $25 off $200 @NewEgg. There is another code if you have an AMEX card, but I don't know that one off the top of my head.

The jump from 960/380 to 390/970 is huge, 40-50%. Definitely worth it if you have the budget.

Yes your PSU is more than enough for a 390, you should go for it and it will be a night - day difference in your FPS.

Nothing wrong with powercolor, the warranty is 1 year less than some others though I believe. The official price of the 390 just dropped 20 bucks, i wonder if newegg prices will reflect that soon (can't see right now newegg actually not loading.......).

The 970 is undisputably the superior option performance and price wise. You can find them for less than a 390 and they'll perform on the level of a stock 980 (superior to the 390 and 390x) once OCed.

970 for sure, especially since it has somewhat similar TDP if I remember right. Somewhere around 170w?

Thanks everybody for the feedback. Unfortunately I waited to long to finally decide what to get. I missed the vco deal as I was checking out. Hoped cyber Monday would bring some deals but they sold out. So instead I went with buying an ssd and a r9 380 4gb to last until the next gen stuff is out.

from past experience, ive actually seen better deals pop up after bf and closer to xmas. they usually start doing those "use this and get x dollars off" and manufactures start doing very large rebates.
