Hey, gang.

I'm contemplating upgrading my old -- but still perfectly usable -- audio editing and recording machine. It's a P3 800 with a gig of PC133 RAM.

Before you start saying "It sucks! It's old! It's outdated," please realize this: it does what I *need* it to do. However, having the ability to do more at once is never a bad thing.

Recently I came into possession of a 1 gig of PC2100 RAM and two Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 chips.

My questions are as follows:

1. Are the Thunderbirds SMP capable?
2. If so, any suggested motherboards?
3. Would I be better off spending that money on a cheaper, faster single processor solution? Please realize this is not a gaming machine, so my needs are very different.

I have all of my professional audio editing cards, so all I need is motherboard.

Also, can you think of any other forums/boards where I might be able to get some other responses to this topic?
 
1) No, the thunderbirds are not SMP capable.
2) For a socket a system, the GIGABYTE "GA-7DPXDW-P" is not a bad bord at all, but you will need new processors if you want to use it.

You could most likely build a single processor system for cheaper that woudl preform just as well as the dual 1.4ghz system you were thinking about. You may want to think about looking around the multiprocessing systems forum here.
 
Hey, thanks for the suggestions.

I ended up stumbling across 2CPU.com -- turns out Thunderbirds *are* SMP capable when paired with the right board, though.

Looks like I'm just going to build a fast single proc system for cheap, though.

Well, with enough time and effort anything is possible. The athlon xp processors are also "capable" with minimal modification.
