Ok guys ,

I am about to build my son a PC for light to moderate gaming and web surfing. I have a feeling that all that will be played are web based games and possibly Minecraft... ughh. I have a lot of parts from an old LGA775 build. Below is a list. My question is , Should I even try with this old hardware or start fresh ?

My budget is around $300 to $400.

CPU: Q6600

Mobo: Evga 780i -SLi

Ram : G Skill (4x 2gb) DDR2 1066

Cpu Cooler : Arctic Freezer Pro

Case : Thermaltake H25



Parts I need are :

Video Card
SSD
Power Supply
Keyboard
Mouse
 
If that Arctic Freezer Pro is as old as the other components, I'd replace it simply on principle.

A Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for $30 would do nicely and should allow for a respectable CPU overclock. (A simple overclock from 2.4 to 3.0 would be very nice)

Video Card: Nvidia 750 ti 2GB (they average around $120)

SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB (on newegg for $83)

Power Supply: EVGA 500W ($39.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438016)

Keyboard and mouse are kinda up to you. I've been buying Logitech K120 keyboards ($14 on newegg) for years now. They're cheap and reliable (hence why I just go by the store once a year and buy a fresh one for kicks). Mice, well, you have a million options. I LOVE my Thermaltake Talon Blue ($20 on newegg).

Going on my recommendations you're looking at right around $300 for the whole shebang.

How old is this son? My guess is probably young so he probably wont know the difference.

I'd go with horrorshow's recommendations, except you could probably go with a cheaper SSD. That old motherboard most likely doesn't have SATA III and thus will likely be the bottleneck of even slower SSDs these days.
 
My son is 14. The Artic Freezer Pro is actually older , it was from my previous system. I had the Q6600 on water OC'ed to 3.2 ghz for almost 5 years.

I thought about this as well....

But the $7 price difference between the 850 Evo and something like say, a Mushkin/PNY didn't seem worth it to me.

Reliability is paramount and we all know Samsung is king atm.

Hitting 3.0 on the CM 212 Evo should be cake for you then....

Do that and go with my above recommendations, and your son will be set.

(Wish I had a reasonably nice rig like that at 14, you're a cool Dad)
