So currently I have an ABIT NF7-S2G mb, running a ATI Rad 9700Pro..

I know my card is a few years old.. but trying to find something more new.. but not as new as the 400$ cards that are out there, What would be the next best sub 100$ card I can get to upgrade my system and see HL2 and FarCry a little better?

i don't think you will find a whole lot around that price range that will be a improvement over what you have , for 200$ you could get a 6800 but imo upgradeing to anything below that is just not a upgrade and is a waste of money.
 
Hmm. I saw some cards on the egg for less then 100 (referb/clear) that had 256mb etc..
If I had to I could go to 200.. but might take an extra week or two :)

do NOT buy a video card based on how much memory is on it , it means NOTHING , more memory is usefull when you crank up the resolution but you can't crank up the resolution unless the GPU is able to keep up.

Edit: save for the extra week or 2 , you'll be much happier with the performance boost
 
6600 GT. for 160?

that's the best bang for the AGP buck.


I'm in the same boat...I have a 5800 ultra.

it's just as fast as anything as long as you don't use AA and AF up to the Geforce 6 series stuff.

That's not very much of an upgrade, if at all. The 6600GT is very comparable to the 9800 Pro, which is only slightly faster than the 9700 Pro. Save up your money or turn down the details in HL2 to get more playable framerates.
 
You can find 6600 Vanillas on NewEgg refurbished starting at about $80... although I think they're all PCIe. Still, worth a look. :)
 
6600gt.....is my vote..it is a boost over the 9800pro in alot of games...almost all games... so I am guessing you will see around..hmmmm30% boost from ur 9700pro...

here....on the very gpu intensive games...and high res...the 6600gt blows the 9700pro out of the water...it is almost 100% faster than the 9700pro in some games...but faster...
 
Best thing, of course, is to wait until you can at least get yourself a 6800NU. Outpost.com had the BFG 6800OC for $199 a while back but most places put them at closer to $250.

The 6600GT is a damned good card for the price ($150ish in AGP) but, for my tastes, it's not quite enough of an upgrade from a 9700. Check out the [H] review of the 6600GT vs the 9800Pro to see if the numbers are good to you.

well....the hardocp review..shows that the 6600gt is using a higher resolution to almost all of the games comparing to the 9800pro and running faster @ higher res too...it would be even a bigger gap vs the 9700pro...So I would say go for it...or find a cheap 6800nu..
