I have the following, the system is over 3 years old now:


Name- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 3.40GHz

9GB DDR3 1334mhz

P6T DELUXE V2

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 (2x280 GTXs SLI on one card)

Creative SB X-Fi

I have a 1080p monitor that i will NOT be upgrading for a long time. So i do not need to worry about playing higher than that.

I'm guessing the video card needs to be upgraded. I'm hoping to use the CPU for a bit longer.
 
I'm in the same dilemma but way lower stats.

I started with a now 6 year old Q6600 and 8800 GTS. The video card died 2yrs ago and I picked up a GTS 250 for $45.
I played all the newest games of the past year on that system at med-high settings 1080p with seldom problems. (just took a long time to load the games/levels)

I just built a new computer: 3570K @ 4.3ghz, 8gb RAM, Same old 250 GTS
Assassins Creed 3 runs as perfect as I could imagine at max settings. I don't even know what the newer cards would improve! But this card is so old I feel like I should get a new one to match.

I really don't understand how reviews show cards like the new GTX 650 running new games at barely playable frame-rates when my old shit seems to do the job!

You've got an SLI system on a sub 6yr old system so I would imagine you're doing at least twice as well as my old thing. Do you really feel a need to upgrade? Did they put like a 400 series chip in my GTS 250 by accident? What is going on? Is it worth spending $200 on a GTX 660 or should I just pick up a 650 for $70?
 
I'd like to know why you feel the need to upgrade. Are you having performance issues? I'm betting you have been bitten by the upgrade bug.

I have a similar setup:

Core i7 920
6 GB DDR 1666
256 GB G.skill Phoenix Pro SSD
EVGA Geforce GTX 580 (1.5G DDR5)

I really don't see anyone that runs a single screen At or lower than 1080p needing anything higher than the 500 series unless you're doing digital content publishing or if you love running benchmarks and have the need for speed.

I'm definitely going to need a platform upgrade well before I'll need a new video card.
 
If you're debating if you need to upgrade or not the answer is pretty simple. Do you notice performance issues in any games that would justify the price of a new video card? If you answered yes then I'd recommend letting us know what your budget is for an upgrade and we can go from there to try and help you pick something.
 
I get 20-30fps in high action sequences in games and need it smooth. I also don;t like playing on medium settings and it still slowing down. I go all out. I just don't want to spend $300 for a 20% upgrade. If people can play at 1080p with high settings with a 660ti, with a 3.4 ghz i7. Then that is what i',m up for trying.
