I want to upgrade my video card. Which card should work best with my setup? These are the cards I have looked at.

9800pro 128mb 256bit
6600gt 128mb 128bit
bfg6800oc 128mb 256bit

I want the 6800 but will this card not run well with my cpu? I know the 6600gt is good but does only having a 128bit path concern anyone? I just want to be able to play games like doom3, and far cry smooth with high settings. The prices for the 9800pro are good right now. Would this be a safe card for future games?

I just bit the bullet and bought a 9800 Pro recently. $185 off newegg I think. Anyway it plays all of my games great and is a huge improvement over my FX5200. As for next generation games I was able to turn all the quality, AA, and AF up on the NFSU2 demo. I can play Everquest 2 at balanced settings with a few unneeded things turned off (blades of grass, etc) at very playable framerates. I was able to turn all the quality up in all of my other games too...Age of Mythology: TT, NFSU, Call of Duty: UO. Overall you cannot beat this card when it comes to pricing and much more important nowdays - availability. I know the 6600GT AGP is faster in most cases, but where can you get one for $185 with a VGA port standard?
 
i personally would go for the 6800. It will run fine on your current system. I am running it right now (though im in the process of building a new one) one a system very simular to yours, in fact your processor and PSU are slighty better than mine, but I had abetter VC card, a gainward ti4200.

My benchmark in 3dmark 03 went from 1531 to 7500. I got a HUGE bump in performance with it.

the 6800 will also help you in the future keep up with games with its better processor, 256 bus, and overclocking, and possiblity of opening it from 12/5 to 16/6 pipes shaders. You will be limited with the 9800pro or the 6800GT.

Dont know what your budget is, but the 9800 is going to be around $185, the 6600 gt around 230, and a 6800 around $270. For the extra money i would go with the 6800. Just wait for a sale i got my 6800 for $199 on sale at compusa, and recently saw a 6800 at best buy for $250. So if it was me, i would get the 6800 without a doubt.
 
i wont break down and get a higher graphics card untill its absolutely neccisary; sure 6800 is faster but then the 7800 would be faster then the 8800.. might s well save my money for somthing better when its neccisary rather then be stuck with budget parts

Well, none of the 128 MB cards will run Doom 3 at High texture detail without some slowdowns, they run Medium fine though (which in Doom 3 isn't very different than High actually). High in Far Cry would be no problem with a 128 MB card though. Very High in Far Cry or Ultra in Doom 3 would be pretty much out of the question. You need a 256 MB card for that. Or a really fast processor and RAM, which you haven't got.

In actual game performance the 6600 GT is almost identical to the 6800, theoretical disadvantages notwithstanding. The 6800 is a little better, but not much at all. Both are considerably better than the 9800 Pro.
 
i don't get why ppl are even buyin the 9800 pro... seriously for only a couple bucks more u can get a 6800 NU or even 6600GT(not sure why ppl buying this either over the 6800NU unless if ur buying the pci-e ver). seriously its a no brainer when ur planning to spend close to 200 and when u can pay basicly 65 more for a card that is like 10x's better then the one ur buyin obviously ur gonna pay 250...unless if ur really tight on cash and stuff like that, then i can understand a couple bucks will hurt u. but lets be honest, most of us if we're plannin to spend 200, 65 more for such a huge performance boost isn't much to ask.

I don't get it either, but:

1. It was once the best card around.
2. It has two years of field-proven reliability.
3. It has two years of building a good reputation. Only one year ago enthusiasts were still crazy about this card.
4. It used to cost $400, now it's less than $200.

These points also count when people buy cards, not only benchmarks and future compatibility.

i think thats the reason... i went with the 5900 and modded it to 5950 cuz is the underdog and just for kicks and giggles
 
while all those maybe true. u can get much faster cards for only 30-50 dollars more... and when i mean much faster, i mean it. ie, 6800 NU and 6600 GT.
 
Sometimes you can find really cheap 9800 Pro deals if you shop around, alot cheaper than a 6800nu. At full retail in AGP the 6800 is the smartest buy, for PCI-e the 6600 GT is the smartest buy since the PCI-e version is like $50 cheaper than the AGP version.
 
If you play games never skimp on the video card. Get the fastest and most feature packed card for your money. Spend as much as you need to to be happy. Or as much as you physically can. I settled for an X800Pro and I wasn't happy with it.
