I currently have an XP 1700 Palomino, 256mb generic pc2100, and a GeForce3 Ti200 running on an MSI KT3 Ultra. I think it's time for an upgrade. I'm probably gonna try to pickup one of those X800 Pros and a new CPU.

Here's the question:

Will something like an Athlon XP-M OCd as much as possible on my motherboard choke my X800 ?

a) Get Athlon XP-M, 2x256 PC3200, thermal paste and good fan
b) New mobo, a64 ...

I imagine b) would cost me a heck of a lot more.

Don't know if a chip upgrade would help you that much.... your board is kind of handicapped unless its been known to go much beyond its 266 bus. I haven't read about its overclocking ability... its also handicapped by its lack of dual channel ram and etc...

I'd save up some money and wait for the new line of A64s to bring down the price of other A64s or themselves coming down and go that route if you are looking for a gaming machine.... I'd also wait for the motherboards to stable out a bit... and PCI express... you may want to get one now but I'd honestly wait a little while longer.. I know I am...

Pentiums are getting cheaper and they can overclock like awesome. If you want something to tie you over a while and are a multiple application guy then go this route...

good luck

OK, I'm in a similar situation (same board, 1900+ proc) and I'm getting conflicting information about a chip upgrade. As I understand those spankty new mobile chips are 133 bus and unlocked. If they work on this board, woohoo, there's the upgrade path. 2400 mobile unlocked would be very nice on this board. Now, I e-mail MSI, they say no (also said mobile chips are not for desktops  ), but I have read user reports on newegg that said it's kosher...

Anyone want to claify? Do the 133 mobile chips work on this board? Do they (mobile) work on most 133 boards, all or none?

I have the kt3 ultra ARU, and this board will run a 166 FSB with MSI bios 5.7 and capable memory. I am currently running my XP2500 at 166 FSB and overclocked to a 2800 using crucial pc2100. .Will this board 'officially' do 166 FSB?....MSI will tell you no. Go to amdmb.com to the MSI forums and you will find people with pretty good overclocks on this board.

If you upgrade your chip, memory (your chip will NEED better memory to see a performance boost) and video card you WILL notice a good improvement IMO. Up that memory to 512 while you are at it.

No, the XP-M will be perfect with the X800. So would the A64, but hey, if you can't afford it... ;)

Well, I guess I'll pickup an XP-M 2600 and a stick of 512mb PC3200.

What's the appropriate fan for this overclock? I don't want something loud.

EDIT: What ram do you recommend?

Actually, X800s and 6800s will choke even a highly overclocked XP. The K7 architecture is nice, but dying. It wont feed the new video cards fast enough.

That said, XP-Ms can overclock well to 2.4-2.6GHz. But even at those terrific speeds, it wont do for the new video cards. A64 is the way to go.

BTW - I'd suggest you go wtih A64. Your KT3 board isn't that great...

I am in the same situation, but with slightly different hardware:

1800+ CPU
768 RAM pc2100 (3 sticks, 1 is generic others are good brands)
Radeon 9600SE
WinFast K7nCR18D PRO mobo (supports 166/200 FSB)

Will I get any boost out of just a CPU upgrade? Will I need better memory if my current stuff won't overclock at all? Will my video card hold me back?

KT3 board isn't that great? Wow considering I have had mine for 2 years now, and I can still play all the games, run all my programs without problems, and had room to expand my system because of how stable and all the options that came with this board...I'd say you are completely wrong. This has been a great board, just is showing its age thats all.

The thing holding me back is my 8500le video card. Slap a 9800 pro on there and my system is good for another year.

Just because you CAN pay top $$$$ for all the new hardware doesn't mean its actually worth it. I paid $600 for my system two years ago, only upgraded my cpu so I have maybe $750 invested in two years for my computer, think I have gotten more then my money's worth.

If this board will handle the Mobile procs it'll be the BEST mobo purchase ever. You can take a 2 year old board slap a current speed proc and it'll still work, and OC to boot. Plus your talking about an incremental upgrade from ~1.9ghz (depends on older proc speed) to ~2.6 for $80 instead of replacing mobo, RAM, and CPU...

Looks like I'll be picking up a XP-M as well.

youd think that, but when you get a new mobo youll wish youd gotten one a long time ago

Yep, I got a 9800 pro on mine, and it's chugging right along like I need. A new CPU will have me set for about a year I'm thinking. By then PCI-E will be out and A64s will be mature, hopeully 64bit windows will be available.

Kronchev, it's all about the upgrade path if you have to do it on the cheap. Not everyone can afford to upgrade to a new rig every 6 months, or whatever your cycle is.

And I am not saying I wouldn't kill for a new mobo/ram combo, but right now $200 for that...its not worth it to me. I have other things that $200 can go to that are more important then computer stuff. Plus if I did have $200 for an upgrade....its going for a 9800 pro first.

I am just sick of the mentallity that "if its not the latest and greatest it won't run any programs or games at all!!" Which is a complete crock-o-crap.

Isn't it worth waiting for an X800 Pro instead of blowing 200$ on a Radeon 9800 Pro?

Do yo think the x800Pro will start at $200? It may be worth the time to wait for the X800Pro to get a good proce drop in the 9800Pro. The poster, like me, isn't made of money and is looking for bang-buck.

Absolutely, my Barton 3000+ choked my radeon 9800 pro, but when I upgraded to a p4 3.0c, my framrates increased alot in every game.

The only cpu I can image that wouldn't choke an x800 would be a64's, or a high clocked p4 c or ee, or of course an fx. Justy mho.

Actually, an X800 Pro will be a very poor value when it is first shipped - due to the decline in the value of the US Dollar, it will probably be priced at a whopping $500 upon introduction, while the X800XT will probably be priced at about $600.

I meant KT3 isn't good for overclocking. Save up for A64 and one of the new video cards...

How is this even a question?

A64 2800+ $170
Mobo $95
RAM $280
HSF $20
----------------
$565, that gets you an A64 @ 1.8 with 1GB RAM and a GeForce3 Ti200

Or...

XP-M for $90
9800Pro $220
-------------------
$310
That gets you a XP @ 1.8 with existing RAM and a 9800 Pro.

How is that not questionable?

If your gaming that second system will smoke the first, the bottleneck in the video department would kill it. The second is much more balanced for cpu/video. The video card can be moved over when you do want to upgrade the mobo. All that and you spend $255 less.

Spend less, get a faster PC. Get the A64 when they settle on pin count (just happening with the FX-53), once the A64s mature a bit, and they have a 64 bit OS. Then make the jump, this upgrade will tide you over until then and for less cash.

Phoenix I hear what you are preachin I got your back!!

anil8- Bottom line is: How much do you want to spend? No matter what you go with you'll see an improvement. Phoenix and I are just trying to give you the "best bang for the buck" option.

Yes. Good reasoning.Or just hold off on an upgrade until SOcket 939 + PCI-E settles in.

I thought he was implying that the A64 was the better deal. My bad.

I was wondering what kind of an OC I'll get with an XP-M and my MSI KT3 Ultra. It's an Apollo KT333 chipset. Does that mean FSB will no go over 166?

I've been looking at the good XP-M ocs and they all push the FSB to 200.

SP97 + Panaflo.

I've got my Mobile Barton @ 2.4 ghz at 1.65 volts. Under load, she's never higher than 10f above case temp.

Don't forget the Mobiles are unlocked, you won't just be ocing on the FSB side, esp. since your going to be FSB limited on the board.

Why not just do new mobo, AMD XP2500 (unlocked), and 9800SE/XT... 500 bucks right there, thus the 2500 is very oc'able to boot, just have to get it unlocked...

I have a KT3 Ultra, and it didn't play very nice with a mobile 2500+...

The voltage options in the BIOS seem to be percentage based, and therefore didn't allow for much of a boost.

Also, the multiplier, IIRC, acted as though it was locked in that board (or was it just plain goofy?... I don't recall, it's been awhile), even though it worked perfectly fine with an unlocked 1700+ and the CPU is currently running at a non-stock multiplier in another board.

The FSB in mine will run fine at 166 (and the AGP and PCI ratios are correct), but there doesn't appear to be much available beyond that.

Perhaps pin modding can fix the multiplier and voltage issues, but I didn't try with that chip.

Because a new mobo that isn't A64 isn't worth it. The KT3+XP-M will be close to as fast as a new mobo+2500. The $310 option is going to be real hard to beat.

Take video out of the equation completly, assume it's going to be upgraded. The processors are roughly the same price. The only thing you get out of the new mobo is a slightly faster fsb, and it's just as dead end a solution as the old KT3 board. That's hardly worth the extra hundred bucks for the new mobo... Besides, if he gets a 166/200 board he will have to replace his ram as well.

For ~$75 he can make the board/ram "last" a while, and still have a fast enough PC.

I have a KT3 Ultra, and it didn't play very nice with a mobile 2500+...
Just in the OCing dept. or in general? I wouldn't expect much of an OC on a KT3+XP-m, it's already a 2 year old board. Just plopping in a decently fast CPU is a nice boost.
