So I was working on my Water cooled setup which has 2 GTX's water cooled and was going to plop a air cooled GTX in between them. As I remove them I find out one of my GTX blocks has a barb that is stripped :( Those GTX blocks aren't cheap and my experience overall with water cooling is that it is pretty damn high maint, so I'm going to convert it back to air cooled.

Shame because that is 15k PPD prior to the upgrade that is now sitting idle! :mad:
And another 5-6k which never got to crunch a WU yet!... Ugh.. 20k sitting there.. waiting on parts..

Thank god my other 3 q6600's are supposed to come in today... at least I can get those up and running to compensate.

Seriously bad luck, ah well, what can you do!



 
That sucks man. I've never been a fan of the full cover blocks because they're so expensive and not reusable. Hope those heatsink fans go back on easily for you!

Yeah the good thing is I have redesigned my entire mini data center, in my head and will have it perfectly organized and designed on the basis of true data centers with a cold side and a hot side!...

I redesigned a A/C diverter over the last few days that took temps from 85-86... down to 77.8F... Which I needed to do in order to introduce 4 new boxes to the data center safely.

So while it is a setback :( it has allowed me to re-evaluate, replan, reorganize my farm. This weekend the entire farm comes down in order to build in the cold and hot side of the room. Alot of this is being done in order to enhance air flow for the fall and next spring when they transition from and to A/C as I've had high room temps in the past and that was only with maybe 4-5 boxen... I'm now going to attempt the transition with literally 12 boxen and these designs are meant to ensure better overall cooling.

Just wait to you see my design for this winter. I'm calling it my 9 tube bazooka cooling method. :)

When I'm done with this phase I'll take pictures to share.

The cold aisle hot aisle approach really is important in data centers so I think you are going to be on the right track. Obviously the idea is to take the hottest possible air in the room, and have that go into the air conditioner. The more heat you give the air conditioner the more it can kick outside.

Sounds like you are on the right track though. Its too bad to hear about your WC block there. I have always been interested in getting into water cooling, but every time I hear something like this, I makes me reconsider.
 
Sorry to hear about your problems. It stinks having hardware sit idle. Once you get those three new quads going that is going to be some crazy production you have at your data center!! I wouldn't be surprised if the NSA contacts you to borrow some cpu time ;)

 
Ouch, that sucks indeed. I'm especially pretty surprised to see a stripped barb threading since that would often require lots of force to damage it. I have a EK FC8800 block on my 8800GTS (same as GTX, just a different mosfet plate) and it's pretty sturdy.

I hope your idea of cold and hot side will work well and like others said, post pics. I might steal the idea if it is proven to work well so I can apply myself :p

 
I will post pictures as I'm constructing it. Otherwise you might not be able to see the design/guts behind my idea. The A/C diverter I'll post soon, tonight, because that was a major advancement in my summer time cooling. Its FUGLY, but so effective!

I don't have a GPU WB ATM. :( GPU full cover WB's are very expensive (I assumed you were talking "full cover" WB) and from what I understand they're better than universal GPU WB's, but are proprietary. (in other words a WB that works on one type of GPU card doesn't work on another type of GPU card) :(

I have to disagree with you on the "high maintenance" statement though. I have 2x Q6600's and both of them are CPU loop only with Apogee GT's, MCP350's and MCR220's. Other than cleanin' the "dust bunnies" out of the rads and checking the coolant levels (hasn't gone down in about 6x months) I don't see any other maintenance difference from "air cooling" :confused:

I agree with Xilikon about a statement he made in another post "WC'ing is kind of a waste of $ for a dedicated folder".

Well it was my gaming box at one point. Back when I gamed. :) For me I was running Distilled with silver phosphate? can't recall the blue poison you put in... and every time it would cloud up and that was after washing everythign out with distilled Vinegar and rinsed with distilled water. I had put the poison in just as directed and go mildew/fungus... cleaned it out after hours with bleach and rubber gloves and re-rinsed it all and yet 2 months later it was unclear again. It didn't get fungus this time though... I had more than doubled the poison this time...

Thus to me in the end too expensive, too much hassel, and just in general not needed. I can probably get close to the same cooling on my CPU with a True, maybe 10c hotter under load and I'll run the GTX's at 100% fans. I'm also MX-2'n all the GTX's. So once I put them together I'm hoping they never get above 75degrees. I'm also swapping them into my Antec 900 Gaming case that has something like 4 frontal 120mm fans and I'm going to rig up a fan to run on the back of the GTX's to pull air ... That Antec 900 case is being wasted on a Q6600 and 1 88GT... which will do just fine in my Antec Sonata II case...

Anyways... way to much info... but that was my end plans with the cards...

how do you plan to do hot side / cold side when you are running nekkid boxen? I would like to know more about this. Thanks.
 
Nekkid? all my boxes have cases, they were only naked in limbo waiting on cases... Now I might be somewhat nekkid when I do this as its going to be a lot of work, I know TMI! :p

I'm planning to create two rows of 6 cases. The first row will have a strip of fans identical to those used in my windows along the entire back of the cases blow up. The fronts will face the inside of the room and will be fed cold air 60-70F, the cases will be shoved next to each other preventing significant hot air from going around the cases. The air flow boost given by the strip of fans should also assist in making sure the hot exhaust side is properly vented up. In the top of the room I have a High CFM fan blowing out of the room. On the bottom I have an identical High CFM fan blowing cold air into the room. I have one rotational fan in the room that is ensure the cold air coming in is spread to all the boxes.

In theory the exhaust should be vented out the back, forced quickly up, and then vented out the room, all the while fresh cold air is being vented in.

Net result should be nothing but cold air entering the boxes, and all the hot air being forced out of the room. Oh I am also going to pull all the slot protectors on the back and attach a fan there sucking air out ... all boxes will have this to help air flow move not only across the cpu, but across the gpu as well.

Right now I have them spaced out and stacked 4 per row, with spaces around the boxes, but what I noticed is the temps climbed in this configuration and I think it was due to the hot air not having a clear path up and out of the room.

 
Not to hijack your thread, but in my main box w/ 2x 9800gtx I've noticed that one runs noticably (10C) hotter than the other. Both are running at identical core/shader/mem speeds. I think the coolers in use are pretty similar but the one big difference is the 2nd card has the big 140mm psu fan right below it sucking air out. Any thoughts on how to get the 1st card running a little cooler?

 
Sunin --- I assumed with the number of boxen that you run that you would have them all nekkid! I fold nekkid as much as possible. I plan to run my boxen nekkid in my folding room... all of those that don't already have cases. I have a few older ones with cases.

I'm trying to figure out how to do the hot/cold side like BillR said to me many months ago. The same thing you are doing. Except I want a system that works for nekkid.

However, in the winter, this might not be such an issue for me. I plan to suck lots of air that is less than 45F into the room... sometimes below freezing, and sometimes below zero.
 
You could do the same thing as I am, but make sure the air flows across and then up away from them, keeping your cold side cold and your hot, moving up and out of the room. The theory is to not let any hot air move across your nekkid boxes... Depending on how you set it up you could put maybe a shower curtain above to guide the hot air to the ceiling and then use fans to exhaust it. That would keep the hot air from circulating around and heating up your cool side... that is really the whole theory behind it... kinda like McDonalds one sandwich they had... the hot side stayed hot the cool stayed cool... what was it McLean?

What to you see my winter project... I'm going to look like Arnold Schwartenegger(sp) in commando... just with a 9 pipe boozka! :) hehehe 9x78cfm = approx 700sqft of icy cold temps filling the data room every minute.

Now during Fall and Spring I may have to invest in a 2nd A/C unit, we will see...

Ah my friend, you miss the obvious. Hop on over to your local purveyor of hardware and pick up a small tube of J.B. Weld.

Make sure your barb is perfect location before you walk away for some drying time. Your barb and plate will have now become one with the universe….like forever.

Follow the directions carefully, don’t use too much (most people do and get the ghetto look) and you will save a ton of money time and effort.

There are also a number of companies who make a product that starts out as a white or grey powder. You mix a small amount of the powder with the supplied liquid. Apply a small quantity to the barb and screw it back in again making sure it is positioned properly. Last step is the supplied spray can of catalyst. You quickly spray a small amount around your new seam and in less than one hours the two parts become as one. This stuff was invented by ITT and is used to glue airliners together.

I’ve used both products with 100% success over the years and was surprised to find that after the repair was made if you wanted to take it apart you had to cut anywhere but the repair. Strong stuff.

I'm familiar with JB Weld I used to do some auto modification and used it on oil lines leading to the turbo.

But honestly the fact that it was not staying clear and clean... really concerned me. that is a lot of money and hardware... I'll just end up selling all the water cooling stuff at a substantial loss...

I used to repair high pressure AC lines with JB, never an issue. We always told the customer to please come back when the new line comes in but they never did and I never had a line break lose.

Don't forget about the two part expoxy sticks as well, they work just great.

As far as water cooling as a whole goes, frankly with some of the newer air coolers on the market all the plumbing etc just isn't worth the hassle.

Now I see there is a TRUE for video cards, nifty stuff;)

I'm doubting she's for sale... but was fun to look at during the UFC 86! Although I can tell you I felt like a giant with those two on my arm... they were feather light and small... I really felt like i could have shotputted both.

Seems, in principle, to be similar to air flow issues inside a case, only you
have expanded it to the room level. Love it! :)

 
I am looking to get a vinyl clear shower curtain which I am going to use to drape mid way over the cases. Thus creating a small barrier for the heat, basically isolating the hot side. Then I'm going to mount a string of fans blowing the air across, so that the heat is driven to the exhaust fan which will then vent it out of the room.

I'll take pictures as I proceed... I think it is working because the temp by the hot side is about 87F... the cold side is about 65F. I expect when I add the shower curtain that the temps will climb to in excess of a 100F on the hotside with maybe a bit of a drop on the cold side.

I managed yesterday to get my farm back up and running, had to reinstall all new clients... a few are still giving me fits! I will take a look at downloading the older versions from the sticky thread. So I have 2 New computers with 88GTs to finish building and 1 casualty to rebuild and upgrade with 3 GTX's.
