upgrade assistance please

ordered a Samsung 840 pro to upgrade to. Kinda not sure how to go about changing a drive over like this so if there are any tutorials that you can recommend it would be greatly appreciated.

Is it better/easier to clone and migrate over to the new drive? or is it better to start fresh?
and if I clone it do I still have to install all drivers such as mobo, gfx, etc...?

I am kinda thinking starting fresh with the drive, because I will only be using it to store the OS and games that I play. But again, Ive never done this so I am not sure which way to go.

By your own post it looks like a clean install is the only option.
 
I've personally done clones and fresh installs and haven't seen much difference between the two. You can obviously try both. I think the performance improvement you get by going SSD renders the choice moot.

If you're installing it onto the same hardware with a clone you shouldn't have to install anything.

Valid but it sounds like he will have less stuff installed on the SSD than he currently has.
 
The drive comes with a Windows-based clone program (either that or you can download it from the Samsung webpage).

It's possible you can move the other stuff off the drive first (or uninstall the stuff you don't want on the SSD), execute a clone then move the other stuff back to your HDD.
 
You can always use the following

- download CloneZilla (use the installer for a USB stick, 1 GB is enough)
- install the new SSD to a free Sata port
- boot clonezille and select disk to disk
(you can use a NFS or SMB server to clone to/from images for deployment and backup)

- clone it. thats all, even with Windows 8 and its hidden partitions


if your new disk is bigger, you can resize within windows
if your new disk is smaller, you can try to shrink the old partition within Windows
 
Forgot to mention that I have an external hard drive that I use and have been putting the things that I want to keep on there. Also been getting rid of old games that I no longer play so my main hard drive currently has around 230G on it right now. Will be even less by the time I delete some other things.
