I'm currently air cooled, rebuilding my loop. I want to get a new video card prior to then to see if I should add it in. I play at 1680 x 1050 but would like to move up to 1920 x 1200 with a new monitor.

Any suggestions under $300 would be great! Thanks for your consideration.

lose the 2600k its just logical cores that will not offer any advantage, and get a 2500k for the same performance for less.

ocz modxstream i wouldn't recommend, i had the stealthxstream, and it was a peice of shit. Got it swapped for an ElitexStream and it is solid.

9800gtx+? get something modern, like a 5770, or a gts 450. Reduce the power supplies wattage, to upgrade the video card.

Under $300? You might want to look at MSI 6950 twin Frozr II OC, you can unlock the shaders to equal the 6970 and easily OC it to 6970 speed. I believe there is a rebate making it around 269. Might be the best bang for the buck you can get.

I think people need to stop giving this sort of advice. Even on this model, your chances of unlocking are slim to none. Read all the newegg reviews if you don't believe me.

Do you plan to watercool the card in the future? If so, make sure you get a refernce card. It makes find a block a hell of a lot easier.

I got a 6950 2gb about a month ago and I'm pretty pleased, but if i had it to over again, I'd spring for the 6970.

lol newegg reviews. I doubt it's slim to none. I've had 2 and they both unlocked, I'll be getting another one from newegg ($176 open box!) monday and I'll try to unlock that also.

Newegg? I think most don't know what they are doing. I assume the level of expertise is higher here. Since you don't own one/haven't tried and obviously don't have experience, leave it to us that do.

I own 2, unlocked the other a month ago, decided to crossfire and just received another yesterday. I just unlocked it this morning. I have never heard of anyone who knew what they were doing being unsuccessful with this model. I'm am sure it it possible, I haven't seen any legitimate reports.

unlocked or not, still one of the best bang for the buck cards under $300.

Also, anyone care to refer me to a writeup on updating the firmware to 6790?

Thanks!

I'm not saying that these cards won't unlock, but no one should be saying they are 100% unlockable.

It is a beast of a card, unlocked or not.

That post refers to the MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III (3) not the the MSI Twin Frozr II (2) OC. I have heard the 3's are problematic. Totally different card.

I am specifically talking about the MSI 6950 Twin Frozr II OC edition as I mentioned above.
