Upgrade advice needed

The wife needs an upgrade and I'm looking to buy this by Sunday night so it can be shipped by Monday.

I haven't kept up with the i5 \ i7 CPU race for the last couple years because the i3s where more than enough for me. The wife is now feeling the pain (currently running an e7500 w\ 4GB ram) because she has started publishing our community news (Photoshop, Quark, millions of open chrome tabs not to mention the 10 plus word docs). A thankless task for no pay, hence my cry for your hardware advice. I've got a thread in the for sale forum and eBay is another option, but I prefer the company here.

Not sure if I want to go all the way back to first gen i7 9xx, but I'm open to the idea. Will she see big performance jumps between the last couple generations or can I stick with an older K series, overclock and max out her memory? I've got an extra 1155 mobo so that would help the overall price, I'm on a hell of a budget soif I can get away with a faster Quad core CPU I'd happily just swap her processor out. As a side bonus I'd like to use this to stream Steam games to my crappy laptop. So I should I be looking at something newer for performance in game or would and upgrade to 16GB memory and a 9550 C2Q do the trick?

With that spare 1155 board you can look for OEM pulls of i5-2400S's or other Sandy Bridge i5 (K models included). Then grab 16GB of RAM and a small SSD.

i7 9XX / Xeon Hex-Core on the X58 platform is about the furthest back I would go (but do consider that X58 boards are still rather expensive).

Another option is to go Haswell with a cheap B85 board and a 4th Generation i3/i5.
 
Thank you for the tip, I actually did end up going with a xeon 771 > 775 upgrade. 12MB cache made a big difference.
