good job...

i know alot of people that dont run the driver cleaner, and it does help alot for performance

Unplugging your internet connection doesnt let XP install any driver. Then you can just cancel the driver install screen, and execute the .exe of the new driver.

Also, ATi's uninstall utility works just fine.

Thanks for the info man. Thats going to save me a lot of headaches when installing my new 9800Pro. I hope the admins make this into a sticky.

I'd still rather use Driver Cleaner in Safe Mode then the uninstall utility. I don't really trust uninstalling anything like this from within windows.....fricken MS.

Oh, and last time I used the uninstaller it killed my ATI tech demos too. :(

No installation, or uninstallation does everything just fine. Theres always bugs and errors becuase of everything software and drivers have to support these days. Driver Cleaner is the next best thing to formatting.

Bump for sticky :)

I'm not trying to put down formatting, becuase there ARE some instances where it's the only real cure. What I'm trying to help discourage here is formatting FIRST.....without trying anything else. It's not the fact that some people end up having to format to do the install that bugs me, it's that a lot of people never attempt anything else, assuming that it's the only way to get the job done right. I've been through my fair share of enough crashes and virus's in my time to know that sometimes you've just gotta format and there's no two ways around it. What I'm asking is why not try something else first. ;) Especially with something as straight forward and a driver installation like this.

While I see nothing wrong with your guide, I simply run ATI's unistall ultility, then without rebooting I use Driver Cleaner from the desktop  reboot, cancel new hardware detected wizaed, install new Catalysts, use Refeshforce 1.10, set fixed rez's and refresh rates and I'm done. I've done it this way forever never a single issue. EVAR.

If you're on broadband just disconnect your Cat 5. No biggie. But I still vote for sticky because I get tired of reading posts from idiots who can't install Video Card drivers, although most of these people won't see your sticky either. These are the same people who turn in front of you in traffic and change lanes without signaling or looking at their blind spot.

I do agree with you, and I think it's great that you haven't run into any issues. I just know that I HAVE so I choose to do things my way. All the power to ya.

I wouldn't quite call them idiots, just uninformed. I was once in the same place and I remember all to well what it was like. :(

You're right. ;) Just get tired of reading their posts, Ergo that's why I vote for your thread as a sticky. Good job. I have little patience with the "public". That's why I've never worked retail. :)

For Nvidia drivers I just update the drivers by going into display properties>settings>advanced>adapter>properties>driver>update driver and point it to the folder I extracted my new drivers files to, install, reboot.... done. Never had a single problem with anything doing it this way. My fast writes and SBA stay enabled, I don't have to go though the process of enabling them again

Cool post though.

I'm not surprised that there are a great many number of people who have their own ways of doing this but again, I just choose to play some things like this safe.

If you find something that works why change right?

EDIT: Just waitin' for the sticky. ;)

I seriously do not know why I wrote that.. but I guess what I wanted to say was good job!

Good news guys, I think a sticky might be on the way, just talked to W1z. We'll all have to give W1zzard a big hug if it does though you realise.....'cus this'd be a great win towards cleaning up some of the unnecessary threads in this forum, and even within individual threads.

/crosses fingers

Great guide. Good Job!

Just wanted to add, for the broadband users instead of disconnecting your cable from the modem/router. You can go into your Device Manager and disable your network adapter. Heh, if your lazy like me and don't want to get up or something ;)

If you don't know how to get into Device Manager? Right click on My Computer (or whatever you named it), click properties, click Hardware tab and you will see it (For WinXP users. I'm not sure about other OS').

Hey guys, thx for throwing little things like that in every once and awhile without being rude or arrogant about it. I really appreciate that there are others on here that have their own ways around things.....and especially when they're willing to DISCUSS their methods, and not brag or boast about them.
