Unusual CFX usage.

With my 290x CFX setup, I'm seeing a recurring issue, and I'm wondering if it's just me.

With CFX enabled, I get load levels like this:

Where one card will frequently drop to zero and so will the other and they alternate in this sort of pattern, but rarely do they ever both get to high usage.

With a single card it's much better:

But still not quite there. Let's just say I have to disable crossfire more often than having it on.

CPU bottleneck perhaps? I don't know. Just curious if anyone else has seen this. :(
 
you should mention a couple of things, it happen with all the games in Crossfire? have you checked the Crossfire profile?. have you Vsync enabled?.
 
which games? what other game are you sure present that behavior? what version of Driver are you using?.

I don't have a specific list of games that don't work, but this example is GTA V.

weird.. everyone its getting a good scaling/performance with crossfire in GTA V. try a clean install of the latest drivers (15.4)

Well, it seems to be better now with a clean install, but it doesn't seem to be performing like it should just yet.

Maybe I need a hefty CPU overclock. I should shoot for 4.6ghz or something. :p

3.7ghz shouldn't be even considered a overclock.. xD try with 4.2ghz at least which should be extremely easy for a 3570K.. but I doubt it will help with your issue.. best way to know its to try with several games and see how it behave, what resolution are you running?
 
I've determined that running it on a single card with the settings cranked way up and vsync enabled produces a smooth result.

I'm thinking.. driver issue?
 
Can you post all CPU threads to go with the GPU usage? As well as games played?

Just seeing those graphs it does look like vsync is on. So confirming v-sync is off in driver and game, next is to see if the CPU is bottlenecking the GPUs which can also give similar results.

I'm starting to think it might be. It might be enough to drive one 290x, but not two of them.

Unfortunately that is a COMPLETELY saturated CPU, amazing to have 4 threads at 100% like that actually. Shows how well indeed the game engine is optimized.

Only Mantle/DX12/Vulkan could reduce CPU overhead and let you continue to use that system with Crossfire cards.

I guess a bit of overclocking is in order, then. Maybe I can get this going at 4.8ghz and I'll see some improvement.

remember to de-lid before think in that speed.. or a some serious custom water cooling setup.
 
I had an issue with 2 x7970's where my second card was actually running at PCI-E x2 instead of x4 on sandy bridge. It was default that way in my bios because of the limited lanes on Sandy bridge. IDK if that's your issue, but I had similar usage issues when it was set that way.

did you mean x4 instead x8?.. Sandy Bridge-HE4 (mainstream 4 cores) have 16 PCI-E 2.0 Lanes so a Regular crossfire configuration will run the cards at 2.0 x8 + x8, same as ivy bridge and haswell. (unless the motherboard support a PLX chip for additional PCI-E Lanes by the expense of some latency..)...

Nah, my mother board ran 1 at x16, the other at x2 or x4 strangely. Even without any other add in cards.

User error of course, if you put the card in the Black PCI-E slot it will run at X4. PCI-E X16 Slots (Blue and White) are what you should use to run both cards at x8, instead of one card at x16 and the other at x4.. in fact no motherboard can run PCI-E x2..

User error maybe, but I did not put a card in a non-existent spot. It defaulted to x2 in the bios mate. I would take a picture of the bios, but I'm waiting on a PSU for my system as my current one nuked my HDD and rather not have it nuke anything else.

oh well, sorry then, yes that's a weird motherboard with a strange PCI-E support shared between the mobo and the CPU.. the second slot will run at max PCI-E x4.
 
Well, some updates. I'm running at 4.2ghz now and things aren't all that much better. They're better, but I'm still getting weird usage on the GPUs and high CPU usage. I just don't even know what to do anymore.

Save up for a good overclockable hex a core and new board. Unfortunately they never made a hex for 1155.Your thread is a lot like the guy who posted problems with a Titan x and gta 5....low gpu usage and maxed out cpu usage. Other games don't need near as many cores for now but in the future they will
 
if you are still using GTA 5 as comparison sadly i have to say that you are still being CPU bottleneck and you will be bottlenecked unless you change the CPU.. in the [H] review they found that they are CPU limited at 1440P with GTX TITAN X SLI using a 4.8ghz 3770K.. so the forecast ins't pretty good for a 4c/4t CPU (at least for that game)

I'm considering getting a fancy big-boy processor soon. I'm doing a complete overhaul on my build, so that's on the list. :)
