I had this computer for almost 2 years now. But lately it's been causing a great number of problems. It's very unstable and constantly reboots. However, if Win98 is installed into this system, it's 100% stable and runs perfectly.

But these problems appear when I use XP Pro. I need to use XP, because of I need the latest updates to run some of my software and games.

Here's the specs from my reciept when I first bought the computer:

AMD Athlon XP-1900+ CPU
IBM 60GB 7200 RPM HD
2x 256 PC2100 PC266 ddr memory
shuttle AK31A KT-266A 4X AGP DDR mobo
Geforce3 TI200 64 MB ddr
ATOP Aluminum case with windows 350 Watt

Any suggested upgrades? I'm thinking about getting NAME-brand ram. It appears the ones that came with the comp are generic no brand. Is this setup stable?

Thanks

possibly driver-related. is that ALL the equipment on the system, and if so, are you using the NAME BRAND drivers?

Yeah, I got ALL driver updates. Including latest BIOS. I also forgot that I have a Create SB Live 5.1

It crashes mostly when I use Photoshop CS or playing games. I guess anything that uses a lot of ram.

I've done memtest on it, passed all 6 tests. I've done it 2 times already.

SB Live + Via chipset-based board = argh

thats your problem right there. try it without the card and it should be 100% stable.

If I disable the drivers/sound thru device manager, would that be the same as taking the card out?

And what sound card do you recommend for my system?

no, you need that thing OUT of the system, they hate each other

anything but soundblaster. ANYTHING. the onboard on nforce2 beats the tar out of soundblaster cards, but since you want a card, look at a fortissimo II
