I've heard conflicting things... Is it completely safe to attempt this? Will an aftermarket cooler be beneficial, or since its all software, does that not matter at all? Where can I get RivaTuner (or does it come with the cards software?)

Anything else I need to know? I am mostly concerned with damaging the card... I dont want to do anything that will ruin it..

I have a BFG 6800OC, BTW...
 
Unlocking the pipes is a software modthat is reversiible and safe. Simply unlocking the pipes didnt affect my temps, so a cooler wouldn't be needed unless OCing the card. The BFG comes stock with a nice cooler so even an aftermarket HS would depend on overall system temps before you OC it. Check out the guide I made for RivaTuner and unlocking.
 
unlocking is well worth the performance gain if you can manage to get a card that does not have defective pipelines. Ive done it on two cards so far with out any problems. Make sure you enable the extra Vertex shader also. good luck on pipeline lotto!
