Unitrends - Backup solution

Hello guys,

I've just started to see what Unitrends can offer me as a backup solution of my virtual infrastructure. Maybe there are some of you who already have experience with Unitrends?
If so, are there any bugs/features/... I have to take a close look at ? If there is any additional information you have for me, shoot :eek:

Yes we bought unitrends vm appliance, has been problem after problem.

I have to baby sit it way too often. Backups randomly fail for no reason other than just because. It is incredibly slow. Slow to backup, slow to restore. We have some 1TB+ file servers and a full backup on it runs at 35-40MB/s. Over 10gbit network....so...yeah.

Has a hard time freeing up space after deleting old backups if they were used for deduplication. I've got 44TB on it and am always running out of space. I'm just waiting for the day here in the future when it can't delete it fast enough and my backups all fail.

Flash based interface. Yes....flash based interface. Although so is vcenter so whatever.

Replication is slow. I 'seeded' my replication target locally before moving it offsite so I could be on 10 gigabit network. Backups replicated at a blazing speed of 2.5MB/s.....

Can't do instant recovery on the VM appliance. Although we knew this going in it's still a con.

We're moving to Veeam since it integrates nicely with our 3par san. Even without the 3par integration it was ten times faster than unitrends. And I can do instant recovery with it.
 
I have never heard of Unitrends before (and my first impression based on the web site's cartoon modal pop-in window is not favorable), FWIW, if you are looking at buying a hardware appliance then I can tell you that one of the local banks I occasionally work with has been using the Evault appliance for a number of years for most of their backup/DR and they couldn't be happier with the service they received.

If you are not looking to buy a hardware appliance then you should at least have a look at some software-only solutions (i.e. Veeam, Nakivo) and see how they compare price/feature wise.
 
We signed up as a partner and deployed 1 physical box for an SMB client that wanted a flexible backup solution w/o future licensing fees. My experience was the same as Eckist, pokey as hell and requires babysitting. Their solution for offsite-backups? a $40 Tripplite eSATA dock and a couple bare 2TB drives. The sales weasel and quote specified a "cartridge-based" system, that went back in a hurry... Short version, we don't do anything with them anymore.

Take a look at their forums, and you'll see a tons of issues and no resolutions.
