Undervolting Case Fans

Hey, I just installed my watercooling system and I am having some minor issues with the noise. The two 120mm fans are a little overpowering and I would like to try to undervolt them to get them to run quieter. I have read some places that there is some risk in doing this because of the remaining voltage. What is that all about? Also, how does one go about undervolting the case fans?

As always thanks for the help...

yes it does... but unfortunately I have no more bays left for a fan conroller...

Also, will undervolting reduce the vibration noises? If not what else can I do?

Yeah, it reduces vibrations, but for further reduction of vibs, look for some rubber screw mounting things..forgot what there are called maybe someone can give you a link, but try look on jab-tech, and performance-pcs.

Anyways, there are little resisters you can buy along with internal Zalman Fanmates that will work for this.

Try the 5V and 7V mods and see which one gives you the air moving you need.

I was really worried about this when I built my WC machine. I took the approach of using the best parts I could - yate loon fans and a really cool noise dampening kit. I also went with a new motherboard cooler just for grins. I'm running the fans at 12V and I'm very happy with the noise levels. I have the case sitting on my desk next to me and the only thing I can hear is the air moving out of my case - no need to mess with inefficient resistors or fanbuses.

If you really want to try to control your fans, try a smaller bay device and mount it in a spare HD rack space - you'd just need to take off the side panel to adjust your fan speeds.
