EDIT: Problem Fixed!
Hello everyone! I seem to be having problems with my FX-8120 rig (relevant hardware details at bottom). The primary problem is that when overclocked and running under full stress from Prime95, my CPU core speed and vcore voltages change dramatically. It will change from 3.9Ghz, 1.2V, x19.5 multiplier down to 1.3Ghz, .8V, and x7.0 multiplier. The research I did on this was unhelpful as the people who were experiencing this were not stressing their CPU, and more importantly, had BIOS settings that were causing this to happen. In my case, all BIOS settings that I believe could have anything to do with this are set to where this shouldn't happen. Here are the settings I find relevant and their values:
- AMD Application Power Management = OFF, Cool 'n' Quiet = OFF, CIE = OFF, C6 = OFF, CPU Thermal Throttle = OFF, Spread Spectrum = AUTO, Overclock Mode = AUTO, AMD Turbo Core Technology = OFF (I originally had this on and this was still occurring)
Could Spread Spectrum have something to do with this? I wouldn't think so. Also Overclock Mode is set to AUTO because that allows me to change overclock settings rather than not be able to (as much as) if it is set to MANUAL, so maybe that has something to do with it?? I assume this has been happening forever since my TPFs with Folding@Home on some projects would go from 33 seconds to 55 seconds without me doing anything.
Back at stock speed (3.1GHz), everything is consistent, so could this be a safety measure that is being taken by something?
Also I have tried setting the vcore and north bridge to 1.3V in hopes that one of them will change the reading in CPU-Z, but to no avail, as the core voltage still reads 1.2V.
I am not very experienced with overclocking and what values should be in relation to other values (eg. voltages with multiplier) so this could all be user error on my part.
I would greatly appreciate any help if possible! Thanks ahead of time for reading and posting! I'll try to give more details of things if I need to.
Hardware Details:
AMD FX-8120 @ 3.5Ghz stable, want it to be 4Ghz
ASRock 970 Extreme4 Motherboard
4GB Kingston RAM @ 1333MHz
