Ultra worth it?

Looking at AGP cards, I was wondering about going to a 6800...but is an Ultra worth the extra dough, as opposed to an GT? (I have permission from the wife for the card upgrade, but I'm not fiddling with another motherboard for a bit...I'm happy with my Neo2 Platinum for the time being) I see sometimes that people OC a GT to Ultra speeds... but I do want to get the best AGP card I can for now. Opinions are very welcome!

MOST GT hit ultra speeds.... that said most Ultras hit even higher!

So if you got a 6800GT you can probably expect about a 400/1100 overclock.

Mine does something like 397/1100 stable with out artifacting.... any higher on the core and it starts to artifact :( I've seen people hit much higher with GT's though.

Now most Ultra's start at 400/1100 or 425/1100 so many of them hit 430/1150

But considering the price difference I'd go with the GT.

There is a difference. If you examine the PCB closely the Ultra has a few more power mosfets/ regulators on it. So it should have better power for extreme overclocking. IE: if you plan on overclocking seriously (watercooling and/or vaporphase) get the Ultra, as you'll be able to voltmod it and it will be able to supply the extra power better.

negative, u will 0nly see 10-13 fps more from a gt, the gt can o/c to ultra speeds with no problems.

Well...I have an MSI 6600GT for the time being. My wife will inherit this card when I upgrade (she'll need it to play her Sims 2 in all it's glory), and I'm just thinking that the 6800 series is the upper limit for AGP now...as it seems that there will be no 7800 in that flavor. I'm just hoping for more punch, but I see no reason to plunk down $80-100 extra for an Ultra if it's better to OC a GT model for less dinero.

That being said...any brands do better than others for the 6800 GT? MSI is a brand that I appreciate, but if there's a standout from another company I'm all ears.

My evga 6800GT will do 440/1160 with the vf-700. I picked it up for $300 back in June. the vf-700 is about $35.

Just get a 6800GT with a good aftermarket cooler (VF70 or NV Silencer 5) and you should hit 425/1100 no prob. I'm using an NV Silencer 5 on mine and I've hit 435/1150 no prob . . .

The main advantage of 6800U's is their faster 1.6ns memory (where GT has 2.0ns). Though that doesn't necessarily mean anything... I mean, I've seen a GT hit 1.4GHz on memory with 2.0ns, and 6800U's not even reach the rated 1.2GHz with 1.6ns. Though usually, it's the other way around :)

6800GT for the win, mine does a nice oc and it probly does a lil bit more, but I dont wanna push it, its awesome where its at.

I just paid 380 shipped from ebay for a BFG 6800 Ultra OC... Now I want to sell it and swap mobo to PCI-E and get a 7800 GT for 350... think its worth it?

Thats relevent to what you're asking... I think the difference from the GT and Ultra is minimal...

Do like me and just get a PCI-E board and get the 7800 GT.. it will smoke them both. RIGHT?

The 7800GT is roughly equivalent to 2x6800GTs . . . smoking it is an understatement lol . . .

Wow... do I just have an awsome 6800gt? Mine is at 410/1100 on stock air cooling. I had it up at 430/1150 back a while ago and it was perfectly stable. I really need to clean that damn cooler :p

What brand is that 6800GT? sounds pretty badass.
As many have said the GT is more worth it.

And for the brands... I'd stick with eVGA, MSI, XFX.

Well the Leadtek one has a very nice copper cooler so that one should OC very well with the stock . . .

my GT does BFG ultra speeds (425/1.1) without breaking a sweat

wont go any higher though.

my AGP GT does 1.18ghz on the ram, and 425ish on teh core. could go higher with some more voltage, but the AGP GT's dont like that as much as the PCIE ones do..

BTW: BFG tech support is bar none. 24 hour turn around time, hell yeah!

No offense to anyone but here is my take on this. Once I notice a technology dying I refuse to upgrade to the highest end card, because the end result is a high end yet still obsolete part in less than 1 yr. Your best bet is to save the $$$ and get a 7800GT with a new mobo and cpu. If you shop agressively enough you can pull this off for just a bit more than your current budget. I'd rather stash $75 bucks from the next paycheck or 2 and go pcie but hey It's just my opinion. This is mostly influenced by the fact that agp can pretty much be pegged as Aging Graphics Port.

evga here and I have loved it, the first time I OCed it I used coolbits and auto did the OC (got 438/1200). That was however in oregon durring the winter with no heating :p
Never got back there stable :(

That's a substantial amount...

That's a pretty general statement. 10FPS to a game taht gets 300FPS is one thing, a game that only gets 20 could be huge. I know the difference between them is only a few percent, but the overclocking ability of the GT should make up for that performance delta.

My Gigabyte 6800GT will do 437/1150 with an NV5, only bad thing about the Gigabyte cards is that you can't view the temperature with the nVidia drivers, you can only monitor it with Gigabyte's own shitty software.

I've found that in most game the difference is extremely minor when overclocking. In a game like F.E.A.R. I get maybe 2-3 more FPS.

That's easily remedied by making a custom bios with nbittor using your current bios backup and enabling the temperature indicator in nbittor, It's only a checkbox ;)
