Turns out that if you buy an Ultra product...power supplies included....you need to hang on to the receipt for them to honor the "Lifetime" warranty, despite the long, drawn-out, convoluted registering process. Why do they have you put all that info into a form if they're going to make you dig up a receipt years later?

They do that so they can sneak out of the warranty claims. Most companies does it.

I've learned the hard way many times. Now I save EVERY reciept for EVERYTHING.

Because the warranty is not transfereable. This is all spelled out when you purchase the product and on their website along with

same, learned hard way and keep receipts + boxes for most computer related stuffs.....just receipts for everything else.

You going to change your name? I ask because every receipt I have for PC gear has my name on it and you're either going to use the other person's name (which is fraud) or have them do any returns for you which is highly bloody unlikely.

This shouldn't be advice just for Ultra. For any product you buy with a warranty, you should keep the receipt since most places require a receipt for the warranty. Also, if you buy the item at a B&M store, make sure to photocopy of the receipt since the thermal paper tends to completely fade in less than a year.

im glad i lost my receipt(even tho tigerdirect can get me another) cuz i wouldnt want another one of the ultra psu i use. its so loud and the cables are ugly.

My cables are pretty. Flex-Force for the win.

I will agree with you though, noisy as hell. Who the fuck puts 80mm fans in their PSUs nowadays? 120mm for the win. I'll buy from Ultra again, but only if they are using 120mms.

yeah id get another one as they seem better now. but i still love the look of sleeved round cables over these shiny ones.

Obviously, you haven't paid with cash in a long time.... They don't take your name or any other information, it's just a straight up sale with proof of purchase (receipt).

And if you DO have a name on there, you can still RMA, it's not like names are hard-coded to home addresses. I've had some friends who are always on the move (consultants) RMA through my residence. Keep in mind, people are also moving, thus the address (if there HAPPENS to be one) on the reciept is also moot.

Nice, but try again.

I hate to tell you this sport but I spent $6000 on PC parts (in one shot) all cash and my receipt had my name on it. And since there was 6 grand in PC goodies on that one receipt I wouldn't give it to someone anyways because I'd possibly end up needing it for something else.

The point remains that buying used gear and pretending to be Joe Blow parts buyer when you're not is fraud and if you use any means to ship the items you're fraudulently trying to RMA it's mail fraud. Personally I hope that someone doing this gets caught at it and gets hung out to dry.

I'm glad you spent $6k on a pc, if you want to waive your e-peen around you are talking to the wrong person.

Save me the talk and save "sport" to yourself.

No one is condoning mail fraud, no one said to RMA used parts bought from someone else... so please, step off the soap box and stop trying to make something here. My statement was purley simple to show that reciepts do not accuratley represent a product bought; as reciepts don't always carry names on them, it's not my fault if you bought everything on one reciept or if you bought it all at one store and spent 6k on it... good for you. The fact remains that the PSU companies are trying to weasel their way out of warranty so they can bring up their bottom line... it's quite simple really.

Now, just for the sake of your argument, you can make copies of receipts and it's also accepted, thus proving my point even further that the whole notion of "having to have your receipt to get RMA repair on a failed product which it was guaranteed for" is moot. Some more modern companies and those who actually cares about the customer are keeping their reciepts electronically, not "hoping" for the customer to loose their reciept.

I was on the same ultra bandwagon and I purchased 6 or 7 of their PSU's, I didn't keep the receipts... guess what? I was screwed for a product that I originally bought. Since then I kept every single reciept... even if I bought milk from 7/11.

The whole argument is stupid...about saving receipts. When you purchase their products, you are required to register within 30 days for the full "lifetime" warranty. Where then is the info that I spent minutes typing into a form online? This should be enough proof of purchase. The address, date of purchase, model and serial number are all entered. Who the hell can find receipts for every item purchased in the last few years. This is bogus. I put the brakes on purchasing videocards from one company a few years back for something similar. My power supply is not dead...the rear fan just hangs up every now and again but it is still completely stable, and I wanted to have the fan replaced before it got worst. I have all the tools, ability and resources to repair it. I just don't want to, as opening the cover automatically voids the warranty. As it stands right now, if it is'nt resolved by Ultra, I'll replace it myself...BUT, I won't be buying or recommending their parts to any of my clients in the future and I build just about three computers per week, almost always using their cases and power supplies. Do the math.

Exactly. And they like to also forget to tell you about their whole "if you want a lifetime warranty, you need to register in 30 days of purchase"... catches many average Joe's just going to say micro center to buy a PSU without going online or registering.

But yes, the registering process should already prove enough information to prove that you are the original. Asking for receipts is just a way to get out of things as most people tosses their receipts or misplace them... not to mention a lot of those receipts fade in a year and are unreadable.

You know what's funny about all of this....

I'm sure 99% of this buy online and when you buy online, what happens? You have an e-receipt either in email or that can be retrieved via a log in on the reseller's website. Newegg, ZZF, Tiger, XPCGear, Performance PC's..... any e-tailer NOT have a way to retrieve receipts online?

Who the fuck puts 80mm fans in their PSUs nowadays?

Umm.... PCP&C, Antec, Silverstone, Etasis, Zippy......

120mm for the win. I'll buy from Ultra again, but only if they are using 120mms.

Sounds like you got an old model. All of the new ones have 140MM fans. Even the cheapy V-Series have 120MM except for the 700W.

If you bought online, if you registered for an account at the etailer instead of checking out as guest, and if you kept your email account or the email itself.

With Ultra a lot of the super specials happens at B&M level which you don't have online accounts to view your reciepts.

Either way, this should be part of the registration rather than the user having to perform an extra step, there is no real reason to have an extra step in the process when first-time registration for warranty is involved anyways.

Warranties should be enforced regardless of the owner/paperwork, they keep serial number records, they keep production records... if you have a defective one, they owe you a replacement if it's under their warranty period. Basically, like a cars warranty... you don't need to be the first owner, you don't need your paperwork, you don't need anything, just drive it in and they pull up everything they need to know using your vin.

I agree. I think they've never really addressed it out of sheer laziness. I've heard from people that work support there that ideas like a PDF upload of scanned copies, etc. have been considered, but then there's the issue of file storage for hundreds of thousands of customers and the product's not serialized. I mean, there's those little holographic stickers on the boxes, but those are just random numbers for rebate purposes and the sticker isn't on the product themselves so they're really quite useless for warranty purposes.

When it comes to management, Ultra needs a good wrecking ball and restructuring.

eVGA's PDF/GIF upload is a great idea, IMO. I don't know if the serial is a big deal, as very few people sell part A only to buy an exact copy as a replacement later on. If it was that good to begin with, why sell it?

As for storage for "hundreds of thousands of customers", how big is a PDF- 3MB or so? Have a 500GB HD array somewhere dedicated to receipt scans, and you'll be set for a long enough time that 500GB will fit on a super-duper-DVD by the time you need to upgrade it.
