Hey I have an Abit-AV8 motherboard and I have 1GB PC3200 ram.. My friend said that the AV8 won't let me use 2GB PC3200 which makes no sense.. Before finding that out I bought a 1GB stick of PC3200 ram.. Do you think it will work?? And if not why not?? I don't get it, on the abit-usa.com website it says that the av8 has dual DDR400.. I think my friend is scaring me..

Dual DDR400 has nothing to do with how much it can hold, DDR400 isnt a size, its a speed naming system :)

As for the AV-8, its an A64- so that means the memory controller is built in, meaning it can take up to 4GB of ram.

Ok thanks, well before installing the ram do i have the set anythig up in the bios? Like dual-channel mode for ddr400 or something? Or just place the stick in and let it automatically do it??!!

it will do it automatically. just make sure you put the sticks in the right slots according to your motherboard manual.

yeah, let's say you have three slots: 0 | 1 | 2

your mobo manual might specify the ram going in as: 0 | 1 | 2
OR
as 0 | 1 | 2

so you need to check to see which configuration will start it up in Dual Channel.

on the abit website for your motherboard it says:

CPU Integrated Dual Channel Memory Controller
- Four 184-pin DIMM sockets (Un-buffered Non-ECC DIMM)
- Supports Dual Channel DDR 400/333/266 (Max. 4GB)

Therefore, you're good for 2GB

...Dan

Some A64s, infact most dont like 4 Sticks of ram at DDR400, they drop it down to DDR333, thats probably what he meant, i dont know if its the same issue with 2x1Gb, although i do know you wont get any 1Gb sticks running at 1T.

It said the dual-channel were slots 1,2 / 3,4 .. DDR400 will work with 2GB pretty sure..

If you have a venice youre set, the issues arent with 2 GB, its with 4 sticks of ram, so it depends how youre getting to 4gb.
