U2410 or U2711?

I've got myself into quite a predicament, [H]. I ordered a U2410 monitor on eBay for $344 (including shipping) as an upgrade to my Samsung 226BW.
However, the Seller accidentally broke the power button when he dropped it during packaging.
He was kind enough to have Dell send me a replacement monitor, but a dead pixel has me disappointed and the seller agreed to refund me and try to sell the replacement monitor.

The big kicker is, the seller just contacted me about how he has a U2711 that he just got and tested for dead pixels and tinting issues (none, according to him)
and he is willing to sell it to me for $200 more than I paid for the U2410 (plus shipping of $38) is this a good deal?
I know that U2711 retails for ~$1100 *NEW* on Dell's site, but I wanted to hear your opinions on my situation before I make my decision. Thanks in advance, [H].

He sounds like he's trying at least, but it's a considerable amount of money to gamble. If you can get the deal and the monitor works then that's great, but you should ask him the source of that monitor first:

I'm not sure what the case is on Dell US site, but here in the UK when you buy direct from them the additional cost over other distributors is attributed to the Premium Panel warranty they give you. If you buy from that guy then you may end up with a non-satisfactory panel and you will not be able to have it exchanged.

My main monitor, a U3011, was bought from amazon and I have the sneaking suspicion Dell sends their not so good results to other distributors for selling without warranty. The backlight bleed on this one seems to be quite prominent when testing with an all black screen. Not an issue for me under mostly general use, but just thought I would point this out.

Well Dell sometimes also send refurbished stock back to it's own customers.

However I would recommend buying from the Dell site directly if you get a good offer. I exchanged 3 different monitors before landing on what I thought was a good 4th one. They were quite understanding about it all and picked up all the collection/delivery tabs.

I don't think a 3rd party distributor would have had so much patience.

He mentioned that he buys his monitors from Estate sales and companies that switching over to different equipment. He never mentioned specific names, though. I plan on asking him the manufacturing date and length of the Dell warranty (if any). The U2410 was a 2010 build, so it still had most of it's warranty left, but he got the 2711 from a different source, so the dates will no doubt be different.

Well, the only reason I'm considering buying the U2711 in the first place is because of the current offer I have now. Granted it's not straight from Dell, but I don't want to deal with the dreaded lottery. Plus, I doubt I could get anywhere near the ~$538 price for a brand new unit from Dell.

I'm still considering just going for the money back and waiting on another U2410 deal. I was just curious if the price being offered for the U2711 was too good to pass up...

get the 2711. the 2410 ask what revision it is?! the latest is a05.

I already know what the latest revision is on U2410 is. I was talking about the asking the seller what revision his U2711 is. I'm not as familiar with the U2711 though, so I'm not sure how relevant revision numbers are for it...

The revision on the U2410 that he accidentally broke was an A02. The Dell Replacement that I received is a A03. Not that these details really matter though

Yeah, I am really considering the U2711 though...unless someone can convince me otherwise :D

Just be aware the u2711 is 16:9 aspect, good for movies, bad for everything else imo.
The height will be about the same as the 24, just with a whole lot more width.

You should still be able to have Dell replace it if it is bad. The warranty for the ultrasharps is standard 3 years replacement. I think for $530 I'd gamble on the 2711 rather than $400 for 2410. That seems like a reasonable risk/reward.

Yeah, the 16:9 ratio debate is something I'm really considering, too. Up until now I've favored 16:10 (as with my old 226BW and my decision to upgrade to a U2410). It's something that I think I can adjust myself to, but it is something to consider.

I've heard that the U2711 is worse with games in regards to its input lag and ghosting compared to the U2410. Can anyone remark as to how noticeable of a difference this is?

Some calcs I did for heck of it maybe you're interested in
U2410 W =20.35 H =12.72 Sq in = 258.88

U2711 W= 23.53 H= 13.24 Sqin = 311.50

U2711 is 20% larger but about the same height.. only 1/2" taller

Now you see why 16:9 is the sux

I was having the same debate but I just couldn't make the sacrifice to downgrade to a 16:9 monitor. In the end I actually went with the U3011 and I absolutely love the vertical display space, both on the desktop and in games. As ZoNe pointed out above, you're only gaining a bit of extra width for the extra cash, not worth it in my opinion. Of course, I spent extra cash for a bit of extra height... does that make me a hypocrite?

I emailed the Seller and accepted the offer. Not sure if I'll regret it, but I'm getting a U2711 for about the same price as a U2410 and I couldn't resist. I know 16:9 is kinda derp, but I figure it's not that big of a deal for me. I'm not obsessive about 16:10 or anything, I'll give it a shot.

Awesome deal. I don't think you'll regret it.You'll probably always be able to sell it for close to what you paid too.

Dell monitors (Ultrasharp) hold their value quite well, at least in Vancouver they do. The moment they come on Craig's you have about a day or two before they are sold.

Definitely the U2711. Much better resolution. The difference between 1920 and 2560 is a huge difference if you multitask or look at large documents or photos. Also, the aspect ratio is 16:9, which is much better than 16:10 for pretty much everything.

Why do people say this? There is nothing to support that having fewer vertical pixels is better? Nobody ever backs these statements up with anything.

Fewer vertical pixels? He is talking about the U2410, and last time I checked 1440 > 1200. If this was U2711 vs U3011 it would be one thing, but this isn't. Most TV shows and movies are either 16:9 or wider, so 16:9 either eliminates or reduces the black bars. 16:9 allows for a wider FOV in games, which allows you to see more. The human eye can see a lot more horizontally than it can vertically.

I'd take the deal, even with the harsh AG screen which kept me from buying one in the first place. Extra resolution is always good. If they ever come out with a 27 inch 1440p with a more typical AG coating found on a typical LCD monitor, I'm sold assuming they can get them to around the $700 price point. Don't care about extra color gamut. Don't need or want to pay extra for that, if that matters to you dell. I'll take the e-IPS panel on one if it costs half the price.

Now who's the seller?

.. and sign me up for his next U2711 !!

The seller's eBay name is selldell2011yahoo, he (she?) has been AMAZING in regards to the length's he goes, I'd highly recommend him. His starting bid prices are really decent; he seems to be one the the lowest (~$300 for tested, flawless U2410's). He's not selling any monitor's at the moment though, but I'm sure the one I sent back to him will show up soon. If you don't mind the dead pixel anyway. :p

Funny, I almost bought one from him over the weekend. He sure did seem like the real deal. I was actually going to wait to see if he had any 2711's come in before jumping on the 2410's he had this weekend.

Right, I wasn't concerned with the 2410 vs. 2711 for that. I was referring to your blanket statement that 16:9 was superior to 16:10. I agree with you, the extra pixels in the 2711 would be nicer than the smaller 2410. It is not a fair comparison for 16:9 vs. 16:10. (27" 16:10 would have more vertical room than a 27" 16:9)

The reasons that you did state are fine for gaming and movie watching, but don't seem applicable to regular computer usage. To each their own, it depends on the main purpose of the monitor. Personally, I can't stand that most of these monitors are 16:9, but I use my screen for work. Gaming and movies are secondary.

While debating whether I should buy the U2711, I had to reevalutate whether or not 16:10 really mattered to me or not. I'm using it on a primarily gaming/movie watching PC. I do need to do the occasional Office work on it, but I figured that the sheer 27" size slightly makes up for it and realized that I didn't really need 16:10 most of the time.

I do agree that the market is flooded by WAY too many 16:9 monitors. 16:10 is a really great aspect ratio and it's a shame that there isn't more of them. Personal preference and purpose of a PC always reign supreme :).

For anyone who cares:
During my last exchange with selldell, he explained that he just so happened to find the U2711 (that I bought) by chance last weekend...and that he doesn't find them very often. :/
Still, I'd recommend keeping an eye on him, he's a good seller. :)

All that's left is to wait for it to get to my house...now if you will excuse me, it's time to obsessively refresh the FedEx tracking page...:D

Thank you much, hope your 2711 is awesome. You'll have to review it when it arrives.
