two monitors with different resolutions?

This might be a dumb question but i cant figure it out. I have a square monitor and a widescreen tv and I would like to have them both show the desktop but in each monitors native resolution. I cant figure it out so im left with blank black spots on my widescreen tv which is annoying as hell, is this possible or are there any workarounds? I have a 6970 vid card, Thanks

If you want them to show exactly the same thing (be in mirror/duplicated mode), you need to choose one resolution and drive both displays at the same resolution, hence the black bars. To get them both at their native resolutions, you would have to choose extend mode where they show different things.

Unless something has changed, there is no way to do what you are looking for, but someone correct me if I am wrong.

All you can do is stretch one or the other to fill the screen which will distort the image on that screen.

However, if you want a taskbar on each screen but they don't have to be a mirror copy of each other you can use 3rd party software like "Actual Multiple Monitors" which will give you 2 complete but non identical desktops.

Would this, or any software you're aware of, give two taskbars, but have the taskbar display only the windows on that particular screen?

For example, if I have Chrome on the left, and Firefox on the right, the taskbar on the left will ONLY display Chrome, and the taskbar on the right will ONLY display Firefox?

yes, Ultramon and Display Fusion do this.
I use Ultramon myself.
