I know its not really video card related but i am looking to pick up a TV tuner card and i dont really know much about them. anyone wanna give me some things to look for or some good brands to look at. i will be buying off a canadian site. thx.

pointers ok, I have a TV/FM tuner in my box - its a Huappauge Model 401. That runs around $70-100 US. (I got mine FREE FACTORY SEALED at a local garage sale...) Should you get one? - Well, if you like TV and would like to vid capture on your computer, or just be able to watch cable on your computer, or want to use it as part of a home theater set up - absolutely. Not everyone needs to make their computer a TV set. I fully recommend you get a TV/FM tuner (as most of the cards are...) Nice added benefit to the set up. Most cards are FM stereo too.
Ok, things to look for - Conextant or Phillips are the TV tuner makers - both are good quality -
The cheap tuners are 8 bit (conextant 878 series for example) If you'd like a little bit better tv image quality look for a higher bit (10 bit should suffice) Also make sure the sound is at least 16 bit quality (as TV/fm signals are stereo 16 bit is overkill)
Now, since Phillips and Conextant have basically all the market (they are even on ati & huappuage cards) you can rely on second tier makers such as prolink, leadtek, etc. Ati & hauppauge branding is not necessary - Now these cards sell from like $35 US and upwards to $200 US. Also, there are new ones that use the USB port (I dont know how well they do)
As for a Canadian store - erm, I wish I could help you there, except I am not Canadian :)
I believe Newegg.com might sell to Canada... Just go to the "Video device & addon category.

NewEgg doesn't ship to Canada :(

Found on their FAQs:
Does Newegg.com ship internationally?

Newegg.com does not currently ship internationally. Presently we only deliver within the United States and Puerto Rico.

www.pcalchemy.com does... but you should ask them to ship using DHL or some other carrier than UPS *Shudder*. That is, unless you enjoy paying $40 customs brokerage fees. Best of luck!

OH, also, NCIX.com carries hauppauge cards as well.

HvyMtl, thx for your reply.
I already have a site to order from. the only thing i will be using this for is watching TV on my computer as i dont want to spend alot of money on a new TV. (i am going away to university and money is tight)
i was wondering if you could pick one of the tuners off this site that would fit my needs.
the ATI TV WONDER VE seemed to get bad reviews so i would like to stay away from that. i was looking at the LEADTEK WINFAST TV2000 XP EXPERT but was wondering if the ASUS cards would work just as good for 30 bucks less.
keep in mind these are all canadian $.

sorry, next time PM me so I can respond quicker to you. ok?
Hrm.
as for your site - well, it times out...
Must be for canadiens only :)
ok, after a few trys - its up - but laggy - and I cant get to the tv tuners... [edit: got there -its up now...]
Hmm, basically put, pretty much any tuner will do - get a pci one. No refurbished -unless you really know what you are doing...
pretty much what you buy can be inexpensive - 8bit video, 16bit sound, cable ready, fm tuner... that is what you should look for - go 10bit or better if you want a real quality feed for video - but generally you wont be able to tell the difference unless you are video capturing.
So, looking at the cards, now that the site is cooperating - the asus TV FM card looks great
here is a little more info -
http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=TV FM Card&langs=09
If your sound card has a free internal sound connect (like the ones for a cd rom)
do use that instead of the pass thru from the card to the "line in" better sound... if the tv card has one.
The hauppauge to go with is the WINTV-Go but its over $30 more for basically the same features...(that is the replacement to the model I have... I bet it has the same series vid chip on it...but mine has a remote)
The Compro - well, havent really heard much about that brand... but it SEEMS to be the best bang for buck as it has a IR REMOTE control - and this brand is popular in Asia...
http://www.comprousa.com/products/vmtvpvr.htm
So go for the Asus (great brand) or the Compro (unknown brand, but great specs (9 bit vid) and bonus remote.
What brand video card you using? The odd thing, after clicking on the reviews from Compro's site is their remote had an nvidia sticker on it... dunno exactly what that means...
But, I think either one should do fine.
Again sorry for the delay.
