Someone brought me a laptop, and begged me to retrieve the data off of the harddrive. He was running winxp (home probably), and the hard drive was formatted NTFS.

I pulled the HDD out, hooked it to a USB adapter and put it in the workbench PC.

When I try to access his user files ( c:\docs & settings\username ) it says access denied or something similar.

I'm pretty sure this is a NTFS permission problem. Is there a way to get around this? I was thinking of booting off a XPe CD to see if that would help. I'm kind of running out of ideas here.

Thanks for any ideas!

Check out this [thread=897047]thread[/thread]. Should have all the info you need. Also, I'm moving this thread to Operating Systems - there are quite a few more MS Certified Pros there with extensive NTFS knowledge.

Two words - Take Ownership

Hint - Right click documents and settings, properties, advanced, and the owner tab.
