Its been a while since I had to troubleshoot like this. What components besides the PSU would cause a system to not even start to boot. I swapped power supplies with one that I know works and it still wont do anything. None of the fans start(not even in the psu), it doesn't beep or show anything on screen. I'm fearing its the mother board, but there is a little LED on the board that is allways on when the psu is plugged in so part of it works... I also tried taking the battery out for a while then putting it back in... nothing.

System specs:
Abit IC7
P4 2.8ghz, 800mhz fsb, hyperthreading
ATI Radeon 9800 pro
512mb pc3200 ram

Some possible places to check are a dead processor, a bad momentary switch for the PSU or reset button, or a bad motherboard.

I would say check your ram sticks, cpu and video card for proper seating. Reseat them and try to power up.

I've reseated pretty much everything. Swapped in another vid card and ram stick, seperately and together...

Is there anyway to tell whether it is the cpu or motherboard without swapping cpus with another system?

My first guess would be the mobo, if not then the CPU, if other PSUs didnt work then that rules that out and It wouldnt be RAM unless it was giving you a beep at the startup. Try another mobo with the CPU and also try to swap the CPU if you can.

so when u push the "On" button, nothing happens?
if this is the case, it is possible that u didnt hook up the buttons correctly to the Mobo
if u did hook them up rite, then it is prolly ur mobo

im pretty sure u can boot up a comp and get some kind of action w/o a cpu, a hard drive, and optical drive. not sure but u may be able to boot w/o RAM

Its been working for months, then this morning it was off and wouldn't come back on, so the buttons are hooked up correctly and i tested the on button just to be sure. I'm beginning to lean towards the motherboard as well.
