yesterday a friend of mine called me, who moved to london a couple of weeks ago. he had his computer shipped to his new address via UPS and now - who would've guessed - it seems fubar-ed: When turned on all fans start spinning (PSU, vidcard, case and CPU) but nothing happens. doesn't even make it to the POST screen, nor are there any beeps from the speaker indicating what could be wrong. any guess where he should start? did a CMOS clear, but that was rather desperation than anything else, i guess. he told me he double-checked if anything has come loose on the way, but says everything sits in the appropriate sockets snuggly. mobo dead?

don't know exactly about system specs, but i know it's an A64 3000+, has gig of kingston hyperX, a 9800pro and 2 WD caviar drives striped. mobo was an ASUS if i remember correctly, i'd have to check back though...

any idea where to start?

Take everything apart and put it back together again. Otherwise file a claim if you had insurance. If you didn't have insurance, you're SOL.

i'd do the same thing, unfortunately he never took a computer apart... he says the UPS shipment was insured for 2000$, so if everything goes wrong he'll go that way. I#ll tell him to take everything out and back in and see what happens...

BTW - what is SOL?
