Troubles installing OpenIndiana from USB

I'm trying to install OpenIndiana on my server. I've never used a Solaris-derived OS, but am familiar with Linux.

I first tried just installing OI to my USB drive, but it said 4GB was too small. This is fine, as I have a spare HD laying around that I'll install it to for now. Hoping to get a small SSD or 2.5" HD at some point.

I tried just using unetbootin, but when it tried to boot from the USB drive it said it was corrupted or something to that effect, don't remember the exact error.

I then referred to the OpenIndiana Wiki, and attempted to use the "OpenIndiana Live USB Creator" tool. The tool ran without errors, but no files were written to my USB drive. Tried it again, same deal.

Just not too sure what do do next.

Thanks,

I don't have one here right now. I never had one in my server because I never had any reason to. I've just gotten used to using USB for ever.

I'll go see if I can pull one out of my parents' computer real quick though ;)

I like to keep a usb optical handy for cases like this :)

I usually do, I've temporarily moved to another city and am staying with family however, so I just don't have everything here :D

Found a blank DVD, and stole the optical drive from my mother's computer (followed by "What the hell are you doing?" :D).

OI DVD literally just finished burning, so I'm gonna go install it :p

Alright, OI is all installed without a hitch.

One thing I'm curious about, is there any way to disable needing to log in? I'm wanting to run this headless and manage it via VNC, but I can't VNC in without being logged in first.

Actually, you can! I had to learn this trick myself. Set up your X environment to start up a VNC session on a different screen, and connect to that with a password.

Uhh, got a link to a guide by any chance? :D

Solaris 11 Express, which is the newer version of OpenSolaris, can use USB. I installed it via USB.

Played around with my server a bit more the last couple days. I've got my two F4's installed and mirrored. Ran some benchmarks via napp-it:

time dd if=/dev/zero of=/data/dd.tst bs=1024000 count=10000
107MB/s Write

time dd if=/data/dd.tst of=/dev/null bs=1024000
192.84MB/s Read

I'm pretty happy with that considering they're low-rpm drives.

Anyways, I also installed VirtualBox and created an Ubuntu VM I plan on using as a media server. Just curious whether it'd be better to use NFS or iSCSI to access the storage pool on OpenIndiana.

Thanks,

Just made an NFS share. Don't want to have to try to guess what size I need the iSCSI target to be.

Tradeoffs. NFS is going to be more convenient, but windows hosts tend to not have NFS available (not relevant to you I know). Also you can see all the files, unlike iscsi which will be an opaque blob, and have to worry about max size for iscsi target. OTOH, windows7 has builtin iscsi initiator...

The reason I decided to go the NFS route was simply that my media server runs Linux :) I don't really need to access files directly on my server from my laptop, but when I do it's easy enough to just SFTP them.
